We are pleased to announce that the UNO-St. Claude Gallery will host two concurrent photography exhibitions during the Society for Photographic Education conference in the month of March. Artist in Residence Ariya Martin curated an exhibit of images taking landscape as their subjects titled “Southern Landscape: Bearing the Mark.†The works are from The Do Good Fund, Inc., a collection of contemporary Southern photography based in Columbus, GA, with a mission to exhibit the work throughout the region alongside community-based programming. Artists included in the exhibition are Eliot Dudik, Joshua Dudley Greer, Jeff Rich, Mike Smith, Rylan Steele, and Walter Pickering.
In addition, Southerly Gold, a collective of female photographers residing in New Orleans - Aubrey Edwards, Ariya Martin and Elena Ricci - will exhibit photographs from their explorations of the far reaches of Louisiana’s landscape in an exhibit titled “God’s Country: Images of Louisiana’s Frontiers.†The artists state, “For two years, Southerly Gold followed the trail of desire for Southern Utopia. From agriculture to oil, from land to sea, they captured images along the routes of the past, uncovering, in the contemporary landscape, the residue those promises left on the land.â€
The gallery, located at 2429 St. Claude Ave., will hold an opening reception on Saturday, March 14, from 6-9 p.m., with artists from the collection and Southerly Gold present. Exhibit dates are March 14 – April 5, 2015.
