BOWSPRITTIN' — The Nautical Mind -- Marine Bookseller & Chart Agents
View this email in your browser
This balmy week, with temperatures surging to the slushy side of freezing, change is in the air and we look hopefully to windward.  Our neighbourhood is now nominally more accessible by car and spaceshippy public transit, so come on down!

Even more exciting: we've finished completely rebuilding our website from the ground up. The new site makes finding and getting the books and charts you need faster and easier, and will allow us to build even better things in the future.  Some things the new site does well include:

  • Better Search
  • Useable on tablets and smart phones
  • Easier checkout process
  • Better account and order management
  • More bloggy integration
  • Faster loading times
  • Even more secure and reliable
  • Currency Converter for our US customers
  • Easier on the eyes
  • Notices to Mariners links and previews on most charts
  • With much more to come!
So, please go ahead and check out the new nauticalmind.com.  We built it for you, so do let us know what you think, and what you'd like to see added.

"It is hard to believe that Toronto has such a great bookstore. They seem to have every nautically themed book that one could desire, including ones that are difficult to find even online (that said, they have an online storefront that I hope ensures that they will be able to stay in business for years to come). A relatively small storefront, but absolutely loaded with books." - J.H. on Google

Great New Books

BE YOUR OWN BOAT!Be Your Own Boat Surveyor
by Dag Pike
A survey is an incredibly important aspect of buying a boat. It’s important to make sure a boat is in peak condition, or that you understand exactly what the condition is. Dag Pike shows you how to do the initial legwork, so you can assess if you're really interested and when it's time to bring in the pro. Illustrations provide further clues, as do Pike's anecdotes and hands-on advice.

Step 1: Locate LighthouseNavigation - A Newcomer's Guide
by Sara Hopkinson
This is a great basic textbook for beginning navigators. It is the 2nd edition, and completely updated to reflect modern technologies and techniques. It is also an appropriate textbook for students of Day Skipper courses.

Hornblower did it firstThe Ship of the Line: A History in Ship Models
by Brian Lavery
This an excellent book that uses ship models to demonstrate the development of English warships in the Age of Sail. It begins with the late medieval/Elizabethan period, through the many and important changes of the 17th century and ends in the Napoleonic era. This book is underpinned by the strength of the collection of the National Maritime Museum and is filled with fantastic high-quality photographs and illustrations.

Let us go then, you and I.Let's Go Cruising! Anchoring DVD
by Paul & Sheryl Shard
This is the first in a planned series of instructional videos from the Shards. This is advanced instruction, especially for anchoring under suboptimal or varied conditions. It also includes other mooring techniques such Bahamian moor, Mediterranean mooring, and anchoring and tying to a mangrove to ride out a storm.
