Analysis: Big Data event

Analysis from the Big Data conference held in January has now been published.

The event, organised by the Exeter and Heart of Devon Employment and Skills Board, focused on how to expand the big data sector in the South West through investment in the development of Big Data Human Capital.

The analysis comprises a video that summarises the main points and debates from the event - to take a look, please click here (directs to YouTube).

Skills for Growth training programme: The Lundy Company

Skills for Growth, the Serco training programme, is continuing to achieve success throughout the area.

The Lundy Company - based on Lundy Island, 12 miles off the coast of North Devon - recently undertook training through Serco’s Skills for Growth Project, funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund (ESF).

PETROC, one of Serco’s delivery partners, worked with The Lundy Company to ensure the island maintains its highly trained staff with the aim of providing the best customer experience possible.

A bespoke customer service training package was designed to meet the requirements of the island management.

The group attended taught sessions, completed projects, wrote new policies, completed and analysed customer satisfaction surveys and constructed a portfolio of evidence.

Following the training, the group will be going on to higher level units at Level 4. In addition the programme has enabled the group to try out new ideas to provide exemplary customer service, with the backing of their senior management team.

ESIF update

Following on from last month's update, the ESIF programme is likely to be agreed with national and EU government very soon.

We will make an announcement as soon as this happens and provide an update in next month’s skills newsletter. The latest advice from DCLG is that outline applications will be submitted online to an existing forms engine called LOGASNET.

To access the system, applicants will have to apply for a Government Gateway ID which can take up to 10 days to go live.

Any potential applicant therefore needs to register as soon as the call goes live to ensure they have access as soon as possible. We will keep the HotSW LEP website up to date with new information as we receive it.

Potential applicants are advised to Read the ESIF (in particular part 3) to see if their aims fit with the proposed activities, read the full update and the latest FAQs.

Unlocking Potential conference

A conference on sharing innovative approaches to work experience and supported internships is being held later this month.

Petroc will be hosting the conference on Thursday 26th March 2015 at the mid Devon campus in Tiverton between 9.30am and 3pm.

The conference will disseminate the results of DfE funded research focusing on work experience and the study programme, and also share best practice.

There will also be a workshop where employers can learn more about unlocking the potential of a new workforce, as well as having the opportunity to feed into the programme and help shape our future workforce.

For more details and the book your place please visit the Petroc website.
