TENTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION RESCHEDULED TO MAY 21

We were all ready and very excited, but Mother Nature had other ideas for the evening of       March 5th! She stopped everything but snowplows from moving that day!  But we'll do the celebrating even better on Thursday evening, May 21.

ROADSIDE CLEANUP, March 21

Remember how satisfying it was to make a KY highway beautiful and clean last year? Get ready to do it again!  This is a fundraiser for New Pioneers and can involve kids over 12 and adults of all ages. You will get great exercise and feel so pleased with the resulting improvement to our community!  JOIN US!  BRING GLOVES. There will be jobs for everyone.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION, April 22

Once again we will be gathering with students and teachers from North Washington Elementary School and community leaders to celebrate this earth that is our home. Join us for music, a short talk and a great lunch as we remind ourselves how grateful we are for this planet that gives us all life, and as we give each other encouragement in the work of keeping our earth healthy and strong.

SECOND ANNUAL GREEN FESTIVAL, April 25

The first annual Green Festival was such a success that everyone wanted to do it again. Vendors share local food, crafts, products, skills and services. Bring the kids, have a locally grown lunch or snack and see what your neighbors are up to.  Energy around this event is already very high among the planners and the vendors. We can hardly wait for Spring and all the good events it will bring this year.
Want your own booth focused on some form of sustainability? Contact our New Pioneers office for an application. DISCOUNT for booth fees ends on March 15th, but you can still sign up after that if there is space remaining.

PIPELINE AND FRACKING ACTIVITY    INCREASING IN KENTUCKY

Even though the Bluegrass Pipeline seems to be history, there is much new activity in our local counties as Kinder Morgan attempts to get the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to approve the "repurposing" of its 71 year old Tennessee Gas Pipeline to run natural gas liquids through Boyle, Marion, Taylor, Green and fourteen other Kentucky counties. The dangers of using an old pipeline to transport highly flammable, unstable substances prompted Marion County officials to unanimously pass a resolution opposing this effort. The fact that the pipeline runs through or very close to both Marion and Boyle Counties' public water supplies is all the more disturbing.
Meanwhile, hydraulic fracking seems to be rearing its ugly head in eastern Kentucky counties. Many in the 26 states already suffering the effects of this kind of fracking are wishing they had never let it begin!  Earthquakes, water shortages and contamination, methane leakage, and destruction of rural roads by heavy truck traffic are only some of the negative results!   Let's all become informed as these issues move forward, ready to contact state legislators and take action as needed to protect our citizens and our land.
