Old Meets New with LED

As the renovations progress on this historic church originally built in 1880, the melding together of new LED lighting and old-world architecture is demonstrating how new can beautifully compliment old. When the church decided to restore this sanctuary building to its former luster and conditions, they opted to remodel/repair the facility totally with infrastructure to last another 50 years. Instead of simply replacing the aging dimmer and incandescent lighting, the case for longlife LED lighting was presented. With the church open on weekdays for visitation and lighting constantly utilized, the LED system presented energy savings and reduced maintenance with increased lighting levels.

Previously, lamp replacement was a tedious chore. It included climbing up a narrow winding staircase in the steeple to access the attic to change the incandescent lamps or to hand crank a winch to lower one of the three handsome 8’ diameter indirect pendants. A new hoist system was installed allowing lowering of the pendants for servicing remotely from below.

The 3000 degree Kelvin temperature of the LED melds beautifully with the soft white and tan colors of the sanctuary. The inherent dimming capabilities of the LED fixtures with DMX control from the new controls system allows almost endless settings to be pre-set. The updating of the lighting also includes backlighting the interior of the stained glass windows at night. Soft uplight from LED spots accentuates the distinctive steeple in the Charleston skyline.
Properly applied, new technology can be utilized to enhance the beauty of classic architecture and reverent worship spaces.

He is a graduate of Clemson University and an instrumental project manager for all of our healthcare and many of our university and design-build projects. In his off time he enjoys playing tennis with his son, spending time with his wife and two daughters, serving at Fairview Church in Greer and of course riding his motorcycle.
