Are you missing out on big web traffic?

Over the past few months, I've been working with Pinterest as a marketing tool. I went reluctantly into it, that much is true. Social Marketing can be amazingly effective at driving traffic to your site, but it can also be a lot of work if you don't know what you're doing. Like so many of you, finding extra time to market isn't always easy for me. I've gotta say that Pinterest has really got me jazzed about social marketing all over again.

The numbers really can jump up when you're using Pinterest effectively. I've seen that with The Practical Herbalist. An article on washing tincture bottles was pinned in January, and we saw a huge jump in traffic that week. Nearly 1000 readers beyond average stopped by to read that article and look at others on the site. Ninety percent of the hits were from new readers, and the bounce rate dropped dramatically.

What does this mean for you? It means spending the hour or two it'll take to set up your initial Pinterest account and boards, then taking 10 or 15 minutes a day to pin is a small investment that could help you reach a whole new audience. It can be a pretty cheap marketing tool, even if you hire a pro to get you started. (I would love to be that pro!) For myself, I plan on working with Pinterest over this next quarter to see where it takes me.

Best Wishes,

How to boost your numbers on the cheap

Social Marketing is a term that's probably becomes pretty familiar to you. Marketing gurus have been touting social marketing for near a decade now, and they have a host of numbers to back their claims. Through sites like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, you can drive a lot of traffic to your website and, if you've done your work well, entice people to buy your products or services.

Here are our top five tips for doing just that:

 1. Integrate social marketing with your website

Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest offer feeds that allow you to publish whatever you've posted on them on your website. Often, designers add these to the front page so you have a dynamic, often updated front page to your website. This keeps your site fresh, even if you don't spend a lot of time changing your site weekly, which tells the world that you're busy and engaged in the work you do. Customers are more likely to contact you for service or buy your products when they believe you're up-to-date and on-the-move, so regular website updates are a boon toward tipping the scales into sales.

Design Tips from March's Billboard Project

Last month, I got a call from Oregon Beach Vacations for a billboard. While the project isn't quite finished, I had such a terrific time working on it I wanted to share a few tips from the experience with you.

Dean at Oregon Beach Vacations wanted a quick update to a design I'd worked on for them a couple of years ago, which got me thinking about what it takes to design an effective billboard. Even though the size is huge, you've gotta treat it like a tiny business card. That sounds crazy, I know. Drivers, who are your primary audience, have seconds, if that, to get the message. Sure, many will see your billboard for a few seconds each day potentially for months on end, but even that doesn't add up to a lot of time to read, digest, and remember. The first tip I gave Dean as we worked on his new billboard was to distill his message: Keep it simple.

For this project, we focused on simple imagery and a clear, short message. We started off with a warm image that invokes the fun of vacationing in Oregon. We added a logo and kept the copy to a minimum. Our aim is to invoke an emotion and call our audience to action. That emotional response coupled with a call to action is my second tip for effective billboard design. The emotional response will help your audience remember you while the call to action offers them a clear avenue to connecting with your products or services. In Dean's case, we want people to connect with the joy of staying in Oregon and call to reserve a rental for the upcoming tourist season today.

While we're still awaiting completion of this billboard project, you can check out Oregon Beach Vacations online to get a feel their business. I'll be posting the completed project on my website as soon as it's done. Be sure to stop by and take a look at it later this month to compare the billboard design with their website for some perspective on how simplified the billboard design is.
