This Sunday

March 29 - "Held by a Mission" - 10:00 am - led by Rev. David Pyle

Mission/Purpose Workshop with Rev. David Pyle - 11:30 am - 1:00 pm in the Sanctuary

On March 29, Rev. David Pyle, the Joseph Priestly District Executive, will lead our service with a sermon titled, “Held by a Mission.”  Following the service, we will have a Subway sandwich lunch.  Plan to stay during Second Hour for the all-congregation workshop to kick off UUCR’s new mission and purpose project, led by Rev. Pyle.   We would like to invite everyone to get to know Rev. David, as he is our primary contact on the JPD staff. You probably saw his picture among those Rev. Barbara projected last week during her sermon. Did you know that he is also a UU Army Chaplain? There are only three of them in our denomination.

Would you like to help?  We are asking for a $5 donation toward the lunch, but are looking for some cookie bakers.  Do you have a favorite recipe?  Please label your bakes so that those with allergies can avoid certain ingredients, and if you would like to share the recipe (in case someone just loves them) a 3-1/2” X 5” index card with the recipe is always welcome.  Let’s show our great UUCR Cookie Hospitality!

UUCR Yoga - 4:30 PM

Minister's Corner

Sunday March 29: Visit of Rev. David Pyle, Joseph Priestley District Executive, “Held By a Mission”, Rev. David Pyle

What would it mean if the center of our religious tradition, amongst and between churches, we're a binding mission towards a transformed world?

Rev. David Pyle is the new District Executive for the Joseph Priestley District and facilitator for Congregational Life for the Central East Regional Group. Rev. Coeyman will assist Rev. Pyle in this service.

Plan to stay during Second Hour for the all-congregation workshop to kick of UUCR’s new mission and purpose project, led by Rev. Pyle. Defining UUCR’s mission is an important step in the process of beginning ministerial search. Everyone --- members and friends --- is strongly encouraged to attend this workshop.

Mary Howard Memorial Service: Saturday March 28, 3 p.m. UUCR Sanctuary

This Saturday will be a Celebration of the Life of Mary Howard, long-time member and dedicated leader of UUCR, who died in February. We anticipate that this memorial service will be well attended: Mary was known and loved by many in the wider community. May we ask UUCR members and friends, to the extent possible, to help as you can with parking by doing some or all of the following: Plan to arrive at UUCR a bit earlier than you normally do before an event. If you are in a multi-car family, please arrive in only one car, or come on bike, or foot, or carpool with friends. If you are willing, park across Wiehle Ave, on Fairways: there will be a crossing guard helping you across the street (UUCR staff will surrender their spaces to handicap parking). Please also help in seating in the sanctuary by not leaving any empty chairs between yourself and the person you sit next to. Blessings to UUCR as you celebrate Mary Howard’s life.

Easter Sunday: Flower Ceremony

Sunday April 5 is Easter Sunday. The morning worship will be multi-generational: that is, children will be in the sanctuary the entire time, and service leadership will be a collaborative between Rev. Coeyman, DLFD Courtney Wilson, and Music Director Nichole Hodges-Abassi.

As part of our multi-gen celebration, we will hold a UU Flower Ceremony. Everyone is invited to bring in cut flowers, to share with others during the ceremony. Plan to arrive a few minutes earlier than usual and bring your cut flowers to the altar area. Members of the worship committee and children will be there to receive your contributions and arrange them in bouquets. The Flower Ceremony during the service is a ritual celebrating renewal through the taking away of a new flower from the assemble bouquets.

Circles of Trust: Geography of Grace II:

If you are interested in taking Part II of Circles of Trust, which I can offer in five sessions during the spring, sign up no later than Sunday April 12. The sign-up sheet is in the Sign-Up Corner, or send a message to admin@uureston.org. We will need enrollment of twelve for the class to go forward this spring. Any questions, contact Rev Barbara, minister@uureston.org.

S.Y.S. So We Can S.O.S.

(SAVE YOUR STUFF so we can SELL OUR STUFF)
UUCR Flea Market Returns as the UUCR Jumble Sale*

Please save your gently-used items for this spring's Jumble Sale* on Saturday, May 30th, from 9 AM to 2 PM. This is our church's (formerly traditional) community sale of used donated items, and we need your items and your time to make this event a success.

What to donate: furniture, electronics, kitchen items, clothing, shoes, toys, books, knick-knacks, sports equipment, tools, and the like. We will accept virtually anything in good working order that someone would want to buy.

If you have questions or would like to help, email as6699@hotmail.com and put UUCR in the subject line.

There will also be an opportunity volunteer or get more information at the Volunteer Fair after this Sunday's service. Both on the 30th and from 7-9 PM during the prior week, we need help sorting, carrying, pricing, advertising; with setup, cleanup, kitchen help, and more. Do you have a place for temporary storage of items? Can you drive your vehicle to pick up and drop off donations?

The UUCR 2015 used goods sale is being organized by Mary Moulton and Annie Simpson (703-391-7950) and we look forward to working with you to make it a success.

Join us on the 2015 adventure we are calling the UUCR Jumble Sale, and you'll have fun while serving the greater UUCR and Reston community.

* "Jumble Sale" is a British term meaning a used goods sale.

New Website-presence committee needs members!

Do you have IT and web skills? Do you have great organizational skills? Do you like to wordsmith? Are you a wizard with social media? UUCR's new website presence committee can use your help if you have any of these talents.

Our new committee is chartered to keep our web presence fresh and relevant. These days, a web presence is far more than having a website. It includes social media strategies, like leveraging Twitter, Facebook, meetup.com and channels we may not be paying attention to. It includes using channels optimized for the public (our website) and for members (our calendar and this eBlast). Probably most important of all is to make sure our content is current and relevant. We need people to help manage the regular review of content on our website and in our other electronic communications outlet.

This new committee needs five active members and we're not quite there yet. If you can help out, contact Mark Hamill at markdhamill@gmail.com and we'll let you know when and where we next meet.

When Fairies Come Out: Recent Paintings by Mary Ellen Mogee

Mary Ellen Mogee is exhibiting her recent paintings in the sanctuary from March 18- April 19. She has named the show “When Fairies Come Out”, from one of the poured paintings which gives the impression of fairies of different colors flying out of a tree hollow at night. For these poured paintings she uses new high-flow paints mixed with other acrylics giving very unique results. All of the paintings have a feeling of the mystical and fantastical about them and glow with Mary Ellen’s special color genius. She will host a closing reception on April 19, 2015, in the UUCR sanctuary from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. Peter Lubitz will provide musical entertainment.

The alphabet soup after my name indicates that I am a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist and registered yoga teacher.

UUA General Assembly, June 24-28 in Portland, Oregon

It is not too soon to give serious consideration to going to General Assembly (GA) this year. The UUA housing reservation system for 2015 is already open.  Although GA does not take place until June, many people tend to make their reservations right away so they can obtain convenient housing close to the convention center, and to get special rates through the UUA reservation system.  Reservations can be modified and/or canceled at a later date if necessary.

Our congregation is entitled to four voting delegates in addition to the minister.  However, anyone can attend GA.  The full time registration fee is $350 per person but increases to $405 after April 30.  The fee is lower for youth or for shorter periods of attendance.  Information about programming, scheduling, registration, housing, etc. can be found on the website, www.uua.org/ga.
