Honoring journalists covering Asia

Jacob Schlesinger was recognized for his nearly three decade-long career as a journalist covering Japan for the Wall Street Journal. Shorenstein APARC honored him with the Shorenstein Journalism Award in early March. He led a panel discussion with the New York Times' Susan Chira and Stanford's Takeo Hoshi and Daniel Sneider.

Announcing APARC's postdoctoral fellows Shorenstein APARC is pleased to welcome three postdoctoral fellows for the 2015-16 academic year. Their research covers a wide range of topics, including substance abuse control policy in Thailand, and how bad policy and corruption emerge in government.
Competing for global talent In a blog post, Gi-Wook Shin discusses the growing competition for foreign skilled workers and what it takes for a country to effectively recruit top talent. Shin also explores how a country can actually benefit from outflows of its own educated citizens.
Mike Cowin on North Korea human rights In a policy brief, Mike Cowin details the human rights situation from a British perspective. He suggests the EU should seek ways to have more impact by restarting its engagement with North Korea, perhaps in the form of long-term confidence building.
Strategy in the South China Sea In a Q&A, Donald Emmerson joined six experts to weigh in on the South China Sea dispute. New America's Weekly Wonk asked: how will China use its rising military and economic power? Emmerson said it's trying to "create a would-be 'new normal'" in that seascape.

The Politics of Commoditization in Global ICT Industries: A Political Economy Explanation of the Rise of Apple, Google, and Industry Disruptors by Kenji E. Kushida (Journal of Industry, Competition & Trade) explores the domestic and regional commoditization battles that have emerged in ICT industries around the world.
