Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, say a heartfelt “thank you” to Dr. Jeffrey Reutter, who retired from his position as Ohio Sea Grant Director on March 31, 2015.

International algae conference at BGSU
An invitation-only symposium at Bowling Green State University brought together algae researchers from across the globe to discuss solutions to the problem of harmful algal blooms that plague lakes worldwide.

Stone Lab Research Coordinator Dr. Justin Chaffin is working to connect more farmers with the funding they need for practices like cover crops, no-till and the two-stage ditch, which all reduce nutrient runoff into Lake Erie.

Early detection offers shot at averting water crisis

While much of the focus since last August’s Toledo water crisis has been on finding ways to reduce agricultural runoff, more immediate measures are being deployed to enhance the skills of western Lake Erie water treatment plant operators in removing algal toxins this summer.

Spring rains taking fertilizer to algae in Ohio lakes

Spring is raining down on Ohio, signaling a welcome end to a bitter winter. But those rains already are washing fertilizer off farmland and into rivers and lakes, where it feeds toxic algae.
