E-News for Thursday, April 2, 2015

1) Sad News from the Advisory Council

It is with overwhelming sadness that the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women reports that our Chairperson Diane Kays died on Saturday, March 28, 2015, after a brief illness.
“Our hearts are broken. We have lost a beacon of feminist experience and a strong voice for all Island families, but most of all we have lost a friend and counsellor. There was so much more that Diane wanted to accomplish to support women and their families in Prince Edward Island, and she had so much more to contribute. We are devastated to lose her so suddenly and so soon."

The entire tribute to Diane is available at the link below:

2) Catherine Potvin and Acting on Climate Change

From our Council Member Melissa Mullen:
I heard a really inspiring interview on The Current last week with Catherine Potvin. She was one of the chosen women from across Canada who participated in the Bold Vision Conference on P.E.I. in September. She has led a team of over 60 cross discipline scholars who have come up with a solid plan for drastically cutting
carbon emissions across Canada. They pushed to get it published a month before the Premiers' Conference in April in
order to get it on the table for discussion.

Please take some time to read it, sign the petition, share it with friends from other provinces, and maybe nudge our government to get behind this plan.

5) Turn Your Radio On!

The Hillcrest Players of Montague are presenting  an original dinner theatre event, Turn Your Radio On!, that will tr'ansport delighted audiences back to the 30's and 40's with music, period skits and advertisements, as well as a “live” episode of that radio drama classic “The Green Hornet.” Director Melissa Mullen has conceived a Montague-style episode called “The Case of the B.unny-eared Cormorants.”  Will the Green Hornet and his sidekick Kato uncover the dastardly villain vandalizing the beloved Artworks on Main?  Admission is $25 and includes a 3-course dinner. Performances on April 24 and 25 at 6:30 p.m., Hillcrest United Church, Montague.  Tickets are available from Clara at Stewart & Beck’s Home Hardware or by calling Clara at 838-4555 or Margie at 838-4613.

6) Dramatic Reading in Georgetown

An aging director looking to go out in a blaze of theatrical glory,  the town counsellors who want to give him the boot, a smooth crooner from out-of-province and a 20-foot statue of Glooscap are some of the ingredients in The Putmore Island Tempest , a new comedy by award-winning playwright, Mary Vingoe.

Ms. Vingoe, The King's Playhouse,  Georgetown, and the Homestead Players' Rob MacLean and Melissa Mullen will spend an intense weekend working with a large cast of actors before presenting The Putmore Island Tempest to the public in a reading at the Playhouse on April 12th at 7 p.m.

Mary Vingoe is an actor, director and writer who has made a career of exploring local stories in theatre productions which are fun, surprising and moving.  Her plays include Hooligans with Jan Kudelka, published in New Canadian Drama, The Company Store, based on the novel by Sheldon Currie and Living Curiosities, based on the story of the 19th century giantess, Anna Swan. Living Curiosities is published by Playwrights Canada Press. In 2009 Mary Vingoe was awarded the Portia White Prize, Nova Scotia's highest award for artistic excellence.

There is no charge to attend the reading, but donations are appreciated and will help the Playhouse remain a vibrant presence in Georgetown.  For more information please call 902 652 2053 or email info@kingsplayhouse.com.
