De Leo Fund of Italy – Helping the Survivors

Since 2007, the NGO De Leo Fund is dedicated to providing support to people who have suffered the loss of a loved one in a tragic and sudden manner (accidents, suicides, natural disasters, murders). Through the years, it has enabled many contacts and opportunities for support to survivors of traumatic deaths, especially those who have lost someone due to suicide. The main services we provide are: a telephone helpline (national); a live chat; the forum “Breaking the silence: the suicide of a loved one”; self-help groups; face-to-face assistance to individuals, couples and families; and, creative workshops.
A toll-free number (available within Italy), activated in 2011, usually provides the initial opportunity for contact with the operators of the association to survivors, and is aimed at taking charge of such individual or group.

What really is postvention?
The 2014 Version

By Michelle Linn-Gust, Ph.D. Past President, American Association of Suicidology
It has been over twenty-one years since my sister ended her life. When I write that number, it’s hard to believe how much time has gone and how much life has happened since her death. I spent much of the first twenty years of my life after her death doing a variety of things related to suicide: working through my own grief; adjusting to life without my sister; educating others about suicide and suicide grief; and looking at how do we best help people cope after something that seems so devastating after it happens.

International Work Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement

The 28th Meeting of the International Work Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement (IWG) met for a week of discussions at the Grand Hotel, Taipei, Taiwan, in February this year. This meeting marked the 40th anniversary of IWG’s foundation. Prior to the IWG meeting, the Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taipei, hosted the IWG Death, Dying and Bereavement International Perspectives Conference. Gathering for these events were more than a hundred IWG members, guest members and guests.

The congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) will be held in Montreal, Canada, 16 – 20 June 2015. The conference is of interest for researchers, clinicians, and those bereaved by suicide. The IASP Special Interest Group on Suicide Bereavement and Postvention initiated a ‘postvention stream’ in the conference program. As a result, the presentations related to suicide bereavement and postvention should be visible within the large number of presentations over this five-day event.
