Social and Topics of Interest Evening with QPWS and DEHP
On Wednesday 22nd April Jason Jacobi from QPWS and Allan Williams from DEHP will discuss:
National Park Acquisitions
- The status of the 12 NRS/other properties and a timeframe for gazettal (plus an update on other national park additions)
- The process to resolve mining exploration interests
- National park acquisitions strategy for the 2015-2018 term of State Government
National Park Management
- Meeting operational management costs on new national parks
- The cessation of grazing on national parks
- Future of commercial activity on-park
- Future of activities such as horse riding on-park
- Any major park infrastructure projects for 2015

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park
Over the weekend, the Abbott LNP Government announced an additional $100m to improve water quality on the Great Barrier Reef on Queensland’s far north coast. Other key commitments made to protect the Reef include the limiting the dumping of dredge spoil from port expansions, containing the number of large ports on the coastline, and a longer term plan to address water quality running into the reef. Some conservation groups have expressed concern that the Reef 2050 Plan does not cap the amount of maintenance dredging that can be performed. Expanding the number of protected areas in Reef catchments is still one of the best ways to protect water quality, and ultimately this iconic marine park.
Naree Budjong Djara (North Stradbroke Island) National Park
At the meeting with the Minister last Wednesday, Steven Miles reiterated his government's commitment to repealing the North Stradbroke Island Protection and Sustainability and Another Act Amendment Act 2013. This amendment gave license to extend mining on the Island, and to mine areas that would later become national park.
Commonwealth Marine Reserves Review

Kroombit Tops National Park
NPAQ is committed to highlighting the plight of national parks still impacted by grazing. Another Park that is currently grazed is Kroombit Tops - cattle access more than 25% of the Park, which is home to 20 listed threatened species. Kroombit lies in a zone where plants and animals can often be found at either their northern or southern range limits, providing temperate habitats because of its altitude (900m). More information on grazing in national parks can be found in the forthcoming April/May edition of NPAQ's magazine Protected.
Bushwalkers of Southern Qld - 50 year Reunion
Bushwalkers of Southern Queensland (BOSQ), originally called Binna Burra Bushwalkers Club (BBBWC), is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will be holding a reunion on 23 May at Brookfield. Paul S Sattler: Five Million Hectares, A Conservation Memoir (1972 - 2008)
Paul Sattler OAM, was the principal architect in doubling Queensland’s national park estate in the early 1990s, and pioneered the development of a biologically representative park network across the State. He initiated and guided the comprehensive description of Queensland’s bioregional ecosystems and assessment of their status, providing an essential planning tool for conservation and natural resource management. Paul has published his professional memoirs, chronicling in particular the expansion of Queensland's national park estate in the 1990s. A summary will be published in Royal Society of Queensland’s Proceedings Vol. 119.

Volunteer to help NPAQs events and programs
We are currently looking for:
- Journalists and Writers: with the support of NPAQ staff, you will need to research, write, and contribute an article/s to an upcoming edition of Protected.
- Photographers: to contribute photos to our new magazine, Protected. This is a great way to promote your work if you are a budding photographer. Images must be 300dpi minimum.
- Special Guest Speakers: to make a 45min presentation at the NPAQ social and topics of interest evening on 21 October about a recent adventure. Ideally, you are a member or support of NPAQ with stories about experiences in national parks or have many beautiful travel photos to share!
- Supper Helpers: to serve supper at the Social and Topic of Interest Evenings as well as Members Meetings on 20 May, 17 June, 15 July, 19 August, and 18 November.
- Data Entry Helpers: to help enter information into NPAQs database. This is a task for you if you enjoy typing, have great attention to detail, and can help one day per week
- Activity Leaders: with the support of the Activities Committee, you will undergo specific training to become an NPAQ Activities Leader who is proficient in organising and conducting activities, including day walks, accommodated weekends or extended activities, as well as social, educational, and cultural activities.
