Nehemiah Assembly
The Nehemiah Assembly will address and discuss several social justice issues that are urgent concerns in Jacksonville. This year, we will discuss Restorative Justice for first-time, nonviolent youth offenders; funding for the Day Resource Center for homeless individuals; improving employment opportunities in Northwest Jacksonville; stopping the school-to-prison pipeline and improving the elementary school reading program; and expanding available mental health services.
Public officials appear at the annual assembly to publicly express support for programs advocated by ICARE. The assembly is an opportunity for people interested in these issues to demonstrate their support for the proposals by attending and holding public officials accountable for their commitments and actions.
(BBUUC's membership in ICARE is funded in part by the Congregation-Based Community Organizing Matching Grants Program of the Fund for Unitarian Universalist Social Responsibility.)

Social Action:
The 2015 Nehemiah Assembly
|
|
|
We look forward to seeing you at the ICARE Nehemiah Assembly, 7PM, April 20, at the Potter’s House, 5119 Normandy Blvd. (Parking is accessible from the Lenox Avenue entrance.)
The Interfaith Coalition for Action, Reconciliation and Empowerment (ICARE) is a very grass roots organization. Members come from 40 religious congregations in Jacksonville. The yearly cycle includes identifying public issues that need attention, researching what can be done about those issues, then bringing as many people as possible together at the Nehemiah Assembly to hear public officials make commitments related to those issues.
Issues addressed in this year’s cycle include Restorative Justice for first time, non-violent youth offenders (instead of arrests); continuation of funding for Jacksonville’s Day Resource Center for homeless individuals; developing more employment opportunities in Northwest Jacksonville; stopping the school-to-prison pipeline and bringing a more effective reading program into elementary schools; and the expansion of mental health services.
Unitarians have played key roles at ICARE meetings this year. Rev. Philip Baber of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville gave the keynote address at the community problems assembly October 28 and will give the closing charge to the Justice Ministry Network Members attending the Rally March 24. Our own Karen Christiansen gave the prayer at the Research Kickoff in November 18. Karen also gave the prayer at a regional workshop last fall and Ken Christiansen led the entire group in singing a hymn from our hymnal: “Enter, Rejoice and Come In.”
Please ask any of our Justice Ministry Network members any questions you might have, or contact social_action@bbuuc.org for more information.

BBUUC to Participate in Earth Day
BBUUC will be participating in Jacksonville's Earth Day celebration at the Jacksonville Landing on April 18, as part of our celebration of Climate Justice Month (Mar 22-Apr 22). Last year, we had an estimated 500 visitors at our booth! We are looking for volunteers to help us set up, clean up, and staff our booth at the fair. We also need volunteers to answer questions at the booth. Please contact social_action@bbuuc.org if you can help.

Transgender and Intersex Issues
On Thursday evenings in April at 7pm, BBUUC's Welcoming Congregation Ministry (WCM) is sponsoring a series of discussions about issues experienced by the transgender and intersex communities. Since the organizers need to confirm attendance to schedule a facilitator (especially for weeks 4 and 5), please reply to John Giordano privately at lgbtq_welcoming@bbuuc.org if you have interest or plan to attend. The planning and structure of the presentation sessions depends upon attendance.
April 23 - Planning a presentation from a medical professional with discussion afterwards. Precise/specific content of presentation not yet confirmed.

The group discusses Tending the Flame - The Art of Unitarian Universalist Parenting. If you will need child care, please sign up on the sign-up sheet or by emailing religious_ed@bbuuc.org.
Tending the Flame includes information about developmental stages, suggestions for incorporating spiritual practices into family life, teaching the Principles in age-appropriate ways, and answering difficult questions on religious matters.

Universalist Convocation 2015
We are very excited to host the Universalist Convocation on May 29-31. We will need volunteers to help with a number of tasks, and we look forward to working together to make this event a success.
There are two events beyond the Convocation itself that BBUUC members may want to participate in:
- The Black History tour in St Augustine on the afternoon of Sunday, May 31. The cost is $20/person to participate, and we need two weeks' lead advance registration if you would like to participate. Please contact Rev. Pat Ray if you would like to take part.
- The Saturday evening music will be presented by Uncle Eddie and Robin, and will be open on a love offering basis. Uncle Eddie and Robin are well-known entertainers from St Augustine.
Please help us to publicize the event on any blogs or social media accounts you have access to. We have artwork available that you can use, a simple file that can be used as a banner ad, or a larger file that can be used as a content block.
For more information about the Convocation, please speak with Rev. Pat Ray or go to the Convocation web site at www.BBUUC.org/uc2015.
