From the President

Welcome to the first TIRF Bulletin of 2015. I hope that you and yours are off to a great start in 2015.

TIRF staff are hard at work on a number of interesting projects including the Community-Based Toolkit for Road Safety Campaigns, the second phase of the graduated driver licensing framework project and continued work on the ignition interlock technical assistance program, to name a few. Please follow us on Twitter and on Facebook via the social media buttons above for more project updates, Foundation announcements and general road safety information.

In staff news, I would like to welcome two new research assistants, Jan-Michael Charles and Leanna Ireland to the TIRF team here in Ottawa. Jan-Michael has a Masters in Education in Learning and Evaluation from the University of Ottawa and previously worked as a research coordinator and data specialist at The Ottawa Hospital, with a background in quantitative and qualitative data collection and management. Leanna comes to us from Guelph, Ontario, where she worked as a research assistant for the Guelph-Wellington Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Protocol Evaluation Research Team. She recently received her Masters in Criminology and Criminal Justice Policy from the University of Guelph.

In other staff news, our Manager, Communications and Community Engagement, Luciana Nechita, has accepted the role of Communications Manager at Automotive Industries Association Canada (AIA). While we are sad to see her go, we wish Luciana the best in her new position and look forward to working with her team at AIA on future road safety initiatives. Please note that her position and that of the Manager, Marketing and Media has reverted back into the Manager, Marketing and Communications position. If you have any marketing or communications questions, please contact Sara Oglestone (sarao@tirf.ca).

Lastly, TIRF has moved its mailing list platform over to a new system and to ensure that you receive all of TIRF's communications please verify your subscription to our mailing list through this form: eepurl.com/_3az1

Warmest regards,

Robyn Robertson

A New GDL Framework: Evidence Base to Integrate Novice Driver Strategies

The National Safety Council (NSC) and the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) recently announced the release of a new report on graduated driver licensing (GDL), A New GDL Framework: Evidence Base to Integrate Novice Driver Strategies. The goal of the new framework is to address the elevated crash risk of young and new drivers through the integration of best practices drawn from the evidence across the globe regarding GDL programs, driver education, license testing and the emerging use of in-vehicle technologies.

The new report brings together evidence-based components from long-established programs such as New Zealand’s and also draws upon newer programs and other young driver strategies to create a comprehensive Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) framework to better protect young and new drivers from an elevated crash risk.

New Projects

Community-Based Toolkit for Road Safety Campaigns

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) is pleased to announce it has received funding from the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) to develop a Community-Based Toolkit for Road Safety Campaigns. TIRF has partnered with the City of Ottawa’s Safer Roads Ottawa Program to develop and pilot-test the Toolkit to ensure it meets the needs of local communities and includes relevant and user-friendly information to inform campaign strategies at a community-level.

The Community-Based Toolkit for Road Safety Campaigns is designed to share this knowledge with communities and summarize the evidence-base for and theoretical approaches to road safety campaigns as well as best practices from research around the world. It will also include key findings related to a range of road user issues to enable communities to target local priorities. Other components of the toolkit will provide guidance in relation to the use of data to identify road safety problems and inform a campaign, branding and messaging strategies, dissemination and campaign evaluation.

TIRF announces Memorandum Of Understanding with AROSO to bring award-winning Brain on Board program to Arab Countries

Unique driver and vehicle safety education program sponsored by Toyota Canada Foundation accelerates its global growth

TORONTO, ON., (January 21, 2015) – It has been two years since the Ottawa-based Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) and the Toyota Canada Foundation launched “Brain on Board” in Canada – an innovative public education program to help Canadians learn more about safety technology and safe driving. Since then, Brain on Board has had a major impact not just in Canada, but it has begun to gain attention from other countries as well. For example, traffic to the Brain on Board website (brainonboard.ca) today comes from places such as the United States, Australia, Japan and Ukraine.

That global growth has now taken a major step forward with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between TIRF and the Arab Road Safety Organization (AROSO), a non-governmental organization based in Tunisia that promotes a united approach in Arab countries to prevent road crashes. AROSO has plans to translate Brain on Board and use the tool in its educational efforts. AROSO also plans to make Brain on Board available for use by Arab countries.

Help us say Yes in 2015

One of the most fulfilling aspects of the work we do at TIRF is being able to say YES to the people who ask for our help. In 2014, your donations helped share our research with a focus on young and new drivers and impaired drivers; two of the largest contributors to road crashes. All the staff and Board members of TIRF would like to thank all of our many 2014 donors who are making a difference in traffic safety through their donations.

If you wish to renew your organization's annual contribution please contact Sara Oglestone (give@tirf.ca) for more information or visit our website at www.tirf.ca. If you wish to make a personal contribution to the Foundation please visit our CanadaHelps.org page.
