This gospel passage (John 8:21-30) opens with the drama of Jesus stating that he is going away and that the Pharisees will look for him but die in their sins. At first glance it seems a startling statement since it seems good that the Pharisees are looking for Jesus. So a few questions arise from reading this line: Where is Jesus going? How are the Pharisees looking for him that leads to death? How should we look for Jesus?
Jesus is going to the cross when the Son of Man will be lifted up and reveal his true identity. In the passages that follow, Jesus reminds the Pharisees that he is divine and is united with the Father. Only if they look for him and at him with the eyes of faith will they not die in their sins. The Pharisees were looking for Jesus but they were only looking with disbelief, hatred, pride, and stubbornness.
During this season of Lent, let us pray that we will look for and at Jesus with the eyes of faith, love, humility and docility. As we gaze upon the crucifix as Saint Dominic did, let us make an act of faith in the One who always does what is pleasing to the Father.
