Alcohol

Our work around Alcohol Related Frequent Attenders

The alcohol programme team at Health Innovation Network, has published a briefing report Alcohol Related Frequent Attenders to Secondary Care.

The report was launched on Monday this week (23 March) with a half-day event for our members at King’s College London, in Denmark Hill. Around 80 delegates from a cross section of disciplines and boroughs attended. A dynamic programme of presentations included national research, policy and practice. Professor Colin Drummond, Clinical Director for the Health Innovation Network’s alcohol programme, spoke on the research evidence to date for the effectiveness of assertive outreach.

You can find out more about the speakers and their presentations by reading the blog by Senior Programme Manager for Alcohol, Dr Matthew Andrews.

We know alcohol-related frequent attenders are relatively small in number but utilise a disproportionate level of resources, often also having complex mental and physical health needs as well as multiple co-morbidities.

There are some areas in England where innovative and excellent work has been done, with a clear impact in improving patient outcomes, reducing the burden on NHS resources and we also heard about work in Greater Manchester.  We aim to draw on this experience by setting up an Expert Group, that will guide the work and develop a toolkit that can be used locally to encourage and support improved commissioning models.

In addition to the Expert Group, we are forming a network of clinicians and commissioners from across our 12 south London boroughs, who will be undertaking this improvement with colleagues locally.

If you are interested in being involved in the clinical network or have any questions about this work programme, please contact amy.wolstenholme@kcl.ac.uk Health Innovation Network Project Manager for Alcohol-Related Frequent Attenders.

Alcohol: “Stories Behind the Bottle” film competition

The Health Innovation Network and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience have been working in partnership with local universities to develop a series of short films to address stigma experienced by people with alcohol problems and how this can be a barrier to them accessing treatment.

“Stories Behind the Bottle”, was launched last month and written proposals are now being assessed for taking through to the next stage.  There will be a briefing day for the selected film makers on March 30 where together with health professionals and service users they will be able discuss their proposed films, with successful applicants receiving funding to make their films over the next few months.
In September there will be a film festival to showcase the films made and at which an overall winner will be selected. Details of this event will be available nearer the time.

The films created will initially be used in training programmes with members across the Health Innovation Network.

Osteoarthritis Advisors start work in Lewisham

The Health Innovation Network’s ‘Osteoarthritis Advisor’ pilot has now launched at a Sydenham GP surgery.  The advisors are working within the surgery, running clinics for osteoarthritis patients to provide lifestyle advice, simple exercises, and signposting to other services to encourage supported self-management of their condition.

This new service has been set up in response to our members telling us that patients often feel chronic joint pain is an overlooked area. Initial feedback from patients is very positive, and the service will be fully evaluated over the coming year.

We are interested in talking to other Practices who may wish to receive support to set up a similar pilot. Please contact Andrea Carter, Health Innovation Network Musculoskeletal Programme Manager in the first instance. Andrea.carter@nhs.net

NHS Hackday - Geeks who love the NHS
16/17 May

NHS Hack Days are bringing a hackathon to south London (King’s College London, Guy’s campus) supported by the Health Innovation Network.

For the less technologically aware members of the network, ‘hackathons’ are high intensity, weekend-long events that bring together a mixture of healthcare professionals and tech developers to work up solutions to a variety of challenges facing the NHS.
Hacks are fantastic opportunities to link up real grassroots innovation with the clinical expertise needed to guide development of solutions to genuine challenges. The Health Innovation Network is supporting the event and providing one of the judges.

Spaces are going really fast although there will be a waitlist. If you are interested in participating or hearing about future technology events, please contact Wealth Creation Project Manager matthewrigby@nhs.net
