The Fettuccine Forum Presents
Why Is It Called Atlanta? Migration to Idaho and the West after the Civil War

John Bieter, Ph.D., will discuss the impact of the Civil War on the development of the Western United States this First Thursday. Learn how this seemingly distant war influenced place names, the economy, and, most importantly, the demographic makeup of the American West.

John Bieter graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a bachelor’s degree in social science and a concentration in economics. He completed his master’s degree at Boise State University and his thesis was published as “An Enduring Legacy: A History of the Basques in Idaho.” His book, Showdown in the Big Quiet: Land, Myth and Government in the American West, was recently released in December 2014. John earned his doctoral degree from Boston College where he focused his research and teaching interests on immigration and ethnicity, the American West, and American Catholicism. Currently, John serves as an associate professor in the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs and as co-director of the Basque Studies Center.
