Drop in on the Symposium
Thinking about your Honors Project? Want to take your research a step further? With presentations on topics ranging from architecture to stem cell research, and from suspects’ rights to global resources, the April 14 Symposium on Undergraduate Research & Creative Expression will offer you a wealth of ideas and examples.
The Symposium gives undergraduates from all disciplines a chance to share their research through conference-style oral presentations. This year’s event includes 127 topics. Breaks between sessions offer opportunities for conversation and refreshments.
The Symposium is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public. Drop in on the Memorial Union’s second floor on Tuesday, April 14 any time between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and take in a presentation -- or two or three -- by ISU undergraduates engaged in research and creative work.

INTST 350 – International Relations of Asia (4 credits)

For International Studies majors and minors-- This topic will count toward the following modules: Asia, Russia & Eastern Europe, Globalization and Economic Development, International Communication, International Conflict, and Social and Cultural Change
Course Description: Whether the saying that “the 21
st century is the Asia-Pacific century” is true or not, no one can deny that East Asia powers play an important role in international politics today. The facts speak for themselves: the world’s
top three economies,
three of the five
UN Security Council permanent members, and
the majority of world’s
nuclear powers are all interacting in this region. Beginning with an introduction to the contemporary international and East Asia regional environments and a discussion on the concept of regional security, this course examines East Asian international relations in three categories. First, following the paths of classical geopolitical approach and perception theories, it looks at the multiple and bilateral relations of the major powers in the region in terms of four “Ps”, namely, their relative structural
positions in the region; each major power’s comprehensive national
power basis (capabilities); their decision-makers’
personal traits; and their current foreign policy
priorities. Secondly, selected perennial East Asian international relations issues are re-examined in the framework developed in the first category. Finally some multi-national cooperation issues are explored in light of their impacts on the new East Asian international relations environment.

COMS 113 section XW - Introduction to Spreadsheets and Databases (3 credits, online)
Course description: The course is designed for students with little or no prior computer experience. It focuses on two parts of modern computing: EXCEL and ACCESS applications. Students will finish the course with a solid understanding of Microsoft EXCEL and ACCESS software and provides in-depth, hands-on experience with EXCEL and ACCESS projects. Students will need to take scheduled exams throughout the semester in a proctored environment. If you are in Ames during the semester, you can take the exams in 60 Carver Hall or 2552 Gilman Hall. This course is for all

ENGL 214X - Introduction to Technical Communication (3 credits)
Counts for General Education credit: Arts and Humanities
Course description: A broad introduction to the range of activities that comprise technical communication work, including principles and best practices for managing technical information, ethically conveying technical information across cultures, user assessment, and editing technical documents. Provides some practice in those skills.
Course Objectives/Outcomes
After completing this course successfully, you should be able to:
- Understand the history and breadth of technical communication work and the roles "technical communicators play in organizations."
- Thoughtfully discuss what it means to communicate technical information and technical arguments ethically.
- Explain principles and best practices for analyzing the ways and situations in which people read, use, and respond to technical documents.
- Develop and integrate text and visuals in usable and accessible (for example, for low-vision and blind users) print and online media.
- Understand principles and best practices in technical editing, data and project management, and user-centered development and design.
This course introduces students/majors and nonmajors to important and current topics in the culture of professional work as a technical communicator. It pays particular attention to how technical communicators develop and manage digital media. It explores current topics in user-centered development and design. It covers the history of the field, cross-cultural communication, the ethics of communicating complex information to lay audiences, and topics related to working in and leading teams: collaboration, project management, and technical editing.

LAS 350D - Pre-Law Capstone course
MWF 1:10pm-2:00pm
and
LAS 290C - Pre-Law seminar course (1 credit)
W 4:10pm-5:00pm
Participation in both courses will serve students well. There is no formal order of enrolling in these courses. A student’s timing regarding where they are within the decision to attend law school and become an attorney will dictate the course that will better serve them.
Course descriptions:
LAS 350D is a pre-law capstone course that enables a student to learn practical skills to succeed in law school. A student’s participation within this course will greatly prepare them for law school and also introduce them to the Socratic Method of teaching and learning that is used extensively in a regular law school classroom. There are no prerequisite courses for LAS 350D but students need to be prepared for a rigorous yet insightful experience.
LAS 290C is a one credit pre-law seminar that incorporates speakers from the legal community who share their knowledge and wisdom regarding the role and reality of an attorney, planning one’s legal career, LSAT preparation strategies, choosing a law school, law school application criteria, law school admission process, and how to finance a legal education.
