March in Religious Education

Hope

Our Home Groups this month will be exploring the theme of Hope.

The words of 20th century French writer and philosopher Albert Camus come to mind during these waning days of March:  â€œIn the depth of winter, I found within me lies and invincible summer."  May you and your family find hope in the coming seasons of new beginnings, blossoming and growth.

Special thanks to Monica Hetrick for supplying the conversation starters for our Home Groups.

THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE: The Rev. David Carl Olson unpacks the Christian story of Jesus' triumphant ride into Jerusalem and what it means for religious progressives today.  During our Time for All Ages, one of our youth will share a reading.

MYSTERY BUDDIES ends this Sunday as identities are revealed at the Mystery Buddies Breakfast before the service, beginning at 9:45 a.m.  Bring a something yummy to share! Last minute questions: contact Mystery Buddies coordinator Matt Hetrick at matthewjhetrick@gmail.com. Thanks to all who participated in this annual multi-generational event as well as those who helped make it a success.

RE HOMELESS PROJECT --Please bring travel-size personal care items such as kleenex, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, and lotion to church on Sunday. Our RE classes will be putting together personal care bags for the Committee on Poverty and Homelessness to distribute to those in need. For more information, contact RE Chair Melinda Walker at rechair@firstunitarian.net or Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo at interimdre@firstunitarian.net.

THANKS INTERIM RE STARTUP PARTICIPANTS! Some 30 people joined us for last weekend's event. What a great beginning for this ongoing conversation about the importance of religious education for all ages. A special shout out to all who lent a hand with publicity, childcare, set-up, food and take-down, and to our wonderful facilitator Rev. David Pyle of the Joseph Priestley District of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

IDRE KAREN IS MOVING ON UP! -- Karen has moved her office upstairs to the Volunteer Room to be closer to the rest of the staff and the copier! She now occupies the desk across from Music Director Jim Huston. The Library, RE Supplies and Archives remain downstairs.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
NO RE CLASSES on APRIL 5 -- We're giving our teachers and assistants a well-deserved break to enjoy Spring Break. Children, youth and families are invited to join us in the service as Rev. David Carl Olson reflects on the meaning of Jesus' life and death for us.

SAVE THE DATE -- APRIL 19.  Please join us as we continue our conversation about our hopes and dreams for a vibrant religious education program for all ages at a Board of Trustees listening session before the service. More details to come.

Greetings from
Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo

I feel blessed and honored to be joining First Unitarian Church of Baltimore as your Interim Director of Religious Education, following my wonderful colleague and friend Becky Brooks.  I look forward to getting to know you and serving this historic congregation.

Involved in religious education for more than 20 years, I have been a director of religious education, RE teacher, Our Whole Lives leader, youth adviser and RE Committee member in various congregations in Maryland. I am currently on the adjunct staff of the Joseph Priestley District of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

I have served as an Interim DRE at Cedar Lane UU Church (Bethesda); Paint Branch UU Church (Adelphi); and the UU Congregation of Columbia.  I also been an acting DRE at my home congregation, Goodloe Memorial UU Congregation, when the DRE went on sabbatical many years ago.

A low residency student at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, Calif., I hope to graduate this May.  In my past lives, I have been a journalist, a college professor and a Montessori teacher.  I hold masters' degrees in International Relations (George Washington University) and Communications (American University), a Montessori teaching certificate (Advanced Institute of Montessori Studies) and a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Kent State University.

My husband, Ken Shilling, and I live in Glenn Dale, Md.  We were married 30 years ago by the Rev. Fred Muir of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis.  We have a grown son, Kelson, who is a lab research assistant at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

I am a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., and grew up in Wheaton, Ill. and Lorain, Ohio.  I am happy to return to Baltimore, where I last worked as an Associated Press reporter in the mid 1980s.
