March 2015

President’s Message

As we approach the end of third quarter of our year, I am excited to update you on some upcoming activities.

We are preparing to elect our new boards for the regional and state associations. I know that many of you have been approached to run for office and for one reason or another did not accept the challenge. I challenge you to vote for the members who decided that this was their year to make an impact on the HIM profession.

The executive body of SAC led by Annette Baker has planned a Career Fair extraordinaire. Students and other interested HIM professionals will get an opportunity to meet interested employers located in Georgia at this Career Fair scheduled March 27th at Athens Technical College. Make it a priority if you are interested in changing jobs or careers in HIM.

HIT week will be celebrated the last week in March and your regional associations have been planning an agenda to celebrate our accomplishments as a state association. I encourage you to plan some activities in your various places of employment or school to celebrate your colleagues and our accomplishments as a national association that is making a difference.

GHIMA will be sending delegates to Washington, DC for Hill Day and that will include an HIM student. The student who will be accompanying the GHIMA delegation is Sandra Menifee from Georgia Regents University. The GHIMA board is excited to be able to give this opportunity to another student this year.

This has been a challenging year for us all as we look forward to ICD-10 implementation and the changes that will accompany it. Remember we still need you to contact your representatives and let them know that you support ICD-10 implementation.

GHIMA continues to provide continuing education opportunities in the areas that you have identified as areas of interest. E-blasts on the upcoming educational offerings are in your inbox. Please take the time to avail yourself of these opportunities.

GHIMA is also preparing to send a delegation to the AHIMA summer leadership Symposium in Chicago in July.

AHIMA’s annual meeting will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana this year in October. As usual there will be a packed agenda.

Finally, I am excited as the preparations continue for the GHIMA Annual Meeting and Exhibition scheduled for September to be held in Jekyll Island. Registration is open and you are encouraged to take the time to get away from the stresses of work and get some down time at the beach while networking with your peers and getting your continuing education credits. We will have a good time at this annual meeting and I look forward to seeing you there.

House of Delegates Report

Georgia delegates continue efforts to represent the HIM profession and the Georgia membership. The GHIMA delegates are preparing for a trip to Washington, DC for the 2015 Leadership and Advocacy Symposium and Hill Day event. A series of webinars are being offered to help prepare AHIMA delegates for the upcoming symposium (March 23rd), and Hill Day (March 24th) being held in Washington, DC. A lot of energy has been building as the compliance date draws near for ICD-10 implementation. The long awaited ICD-10 code-set brings much anticipation among HIM professionals and the healthcare industry alike. After the last implementation delay by congress in 2014, AHIMA is hoping the October 2015 date comes without interruption and brings the many advantages that ICD-10 has to offer.

Georgia delegates are preparing for the event with five delegates attending an educational session with AHIMA leaders and congressional panels March 23rd, that precede the advocacy efforts planned for Hill Day the following day. Hill Day will begin with a guest speaker presentation during breakfast, where all AHIMA delegates obtain scheduled meetings with respective congressmen and/or legislative assistants.  Four Georgia delegates will be meeting with congressional members from the House of Representative and Senate throughout the day of March 24th. Your Georgia delegates attending are Ed Farr, Kathy Alberson, Sabrina Adams, and Charlotte McCuen; who will be accompanied by an HIM student (Sandra Menifee) from Georgia Regents University as part of strategic efforts in preparing future HIM leaders.

Advocating at Hill Day for the ICD-10 implementation should come as no surprise to congressional leaders, since AHIMA’s Sue Bowman, MJ, RHIA, CCS, FAHIMA, testified February 11th to a subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Examining ICD-10 Implementation hearing. Panelists representing both sides of the new code set spoke during the meeting.

Bowman spoke at the hearing in support of the ICD-10 October implementation date. Sue urged the committee in her testimony to not enact further delays and allow the US to keep pace with other industrialized nations who adopted ICD-10 years ago. Subcommittee representatives listened to debate on stakeholder ICD-10 readiness, implementation costs, and the impact another delay would have on the healthcare industry. The hearing allowed panelist and committee members to dispel persistent myths with evidence from recent reports, surveys, and government studies regarding cost of implementing, cost of further delay, and the impact of the quality of care on implementing a more granular code set. Reported evidence from a GAO Report on the CMS ICD-10 readiness and new white papers were shared. Be sure to read more on the hearing in the Journal of AHIMA, under title ICD-10 Congressional Hearing Panelists Debate Implementation Myths, Industry Impact, and Readiness.

Advocacy events for ICD-10 compliance have been held February 4th and March 12th by AHIMA members using social media through a Twitter rally. The February rally reported the hashtag #ICD10Matters was tweeted over 8,400 times. Actually, several advocacy efforts have been seen around the country with one recently shared by Florida delegate, J. Finkelstein, and FHIMA through a You Tube video recording with Dr. Paul Isaacs on How ICD-10-CM Benefits Physicians. Dr. Isaacs’s points out benefits from a physician perspective while sharing free resource links in preparation of ICD-10. Delegates will be discussing important issues surrounding HIM and Patient Matching and ICD-10 with congressmen during the 2015 legislative session. The importance of data validity and matching patient records is very important in the treatment and safety of patient care, particularly in the growing environment of HIE through EHR’s. So delegates are busy with webinar education in preparing to discuss key issues and learning how legislative offices and AHIMA are using social media in advocating and building relationships to support important aspects about health information management in the US healthcare delivery system.

Attention Regional Presidents – We Need Your Support for the Annual Meeting!

Hello, Everyone!

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Kay Fazikas. I am an RHIT from the Southeast Georgia Health Information Management Association and am chairing the Arrangements Committee for the 2015 GHIMA Annual Meeting and Exhibit to be held September 2-4 at Jekyll Island, Georgia.

As we look forward to the 2015 annual meeting, I encourage all of you to consider attending and supporting your state professional association in the following ways:
  1. Speak with the members of your regional association and encourage a monetary donation from your association to supply door prizes at the annual meeting.
  2. Consider volunteering at the annual meeting. We will need volunteers to man the registration desk, introduce speakers, and distribute door prizes.
You will find the Volunteer Application form on the GHIMA website and may complete it online. You may also contact me by e-mail at katiebugz2851@gmail.com or by phone at (912) 826-3751 for further information.

Mentor Recruitment

I would once again like to reach out to other HIM professionals to consider signing up to be a mentor. Our mentor pool is scarce and very limited. Engage makes it very easy to sign up and become a mentor. You can choose your field of expertise and time constraints by building your profile. I know that many of us are busy individuals, but I think we all can make time for a phone call or email. The goal is to have several mentors from each region so that any student or up and coming HIM professional will have a local contact in his or her area. Most of you know what it was like trying to break into this profession with no prior work experience. This is a great opportunity to offer encouragement, urge involvement at a regional level, while shaping the future of our profession. Please don't miss this opportunity. Engage!

AHIMA Twitter Rally shows grassroots ICD-10 support to Congress

As the ICD-10 compliance date approaches, proponents of the new code set are hoping to convince Congress that an ICD-10 delay is the wrong way to appease the physician lobby.

On February 4, 2015, AHIMA used its online properties and social media accounts to sponsor a Twitter rally using the hashtag #ICD10Matters. The organization encouraged ICD-10 supporters to tweet their U.S. senators and representatives a reason why ICD-10 needs to be implemented by October 1, 2015.

According to social analytics provider Symplur, the #ICD10Matters hashtag was tweeted 8,494 times by 320 participants on the day of the Twitter rally. Their efforts resulted in more than 6 million impressions made. Here are some of the more popular messages from the Twitter rally:

Factitiously yet factual, Paul tweets an ad that displays the newest technology in 1979 (the implementation of ICD-9 in the US). We must move forward. Please tweet, call or visit your U.S Congress members and Senators.  #ICD10Matters

Blue Button Movement

AHIMA encourages component state association (CSA) members to adopt the Blue Button Initiative by taking the Blue Button Pledge and adding their organization to the ever-growing list of supporters. Members can share Blue Button information with your employers and advocate that they participate. (Engage.AHIMA.org)

What is Blue Button?
  • It allows easy, secure online access to your health record:
  • Allows the ability to share your record with your Doctor.
  • Allows you to check your medications list.
  • Allows you to track your child’s vaccinations.
  • Allows access to your entire Medical history in case of emergency.
  • Allows ease in the use of Health apps available by supplying your health information in order to track, set, or reach health goals.
Why use Blue Button?

Patients who have access to their health information through health IT know more about their health, ask more questions, and take better care of themselves than when their health information was less accessible to them in paper records. Source: CA Healthcare Foundation

SAC Meeting
Georgia Regents University

GHIMA Student Advisory Council: A Student's Perspective

The Georgia Health Information Management Association’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) met February 20th in the Health Sciences building at Georgia Regents University located in Augusta, GA. This was an extremely special meeting for me because it gave me a chance to hold our SAC meeting at my home school - GRU. I enjoyed having my fellow students from GRU (juniors and seniors) as well as my professors present at our quarterly SAC meeting. We had a mix of GRU online students, on campus students, and visiting students who traveled from other schools across the state. SAC representatives that were in attendance were Latha Parthasarathi, Marion Grier, Sandra Menifee, and me.

We had a special guest in the audience, Annecia McNeil, the Augusta Area President; she spoke to students briefly offering words of wisdom along with encouragement for the soon to be graduating seniors.  Professor Lori Prince welcomed students, and enlightened visiting students of the many benefits of attending Georgia Regents University.

GRU Class of 2015: Students from left to right: Kimberly Russell, Sandra Tharpe, Christi Snider, Dana Brady, and Dawn Cameron.

I presented my speech from Student Academy in San Diego entitled “Student Advocacy: Empowering Students to Effect Change within their Future Profession.”  This is the time for us as students to remember how crucial advocacy is for our future profession, as Hill Day is March 24, 2015, which is just around the corner.  It is extremely important that we (students) are doing our part along with HIM Professionals to ensure the implementation of ICD-10 is carried out this October 2015. I encourage any student with any questions/concerns/comments on how they can help advocate for ICD-10 to please contact me; I have twitter sheets I would love to share in addition to tips on helping to make tweeting our elected representatives SUPER easy.

Although our SAC Chair - Annette Baker wasn’t physically in attendance she was there via WebEx, and everyone worked hard to get some last minute information for the upcoming Career Fair in March.  There was some friendly competition amongst those in attendance which resulted in a few of my fellow seniors at GRU (Crystal Allen, Utopia Boynton, and Kimberly Garmon) winning a prize. Good job ladies! We had a great meeting at GRU, and I want to thank all those who were in attendance for making my home school SAC visit a SUCCESS!

It's an official GHIMA SAC Selfie with Crystal Allen and Utopia Boynton, seniors at GRU!

In closing, I want to take this time to remind each and every HIA and HIT student that I am here for each of you. As your President, I am your voice in our great CSA - GHIMA. Please feel free to contact me with suggestions, concerns, input, or any other student council matters, and I will ensure they are addressed. Thank you, and don’t forget - We are the future of HIM!

SAC Chair’s Report

Georgia Regents University graciously hosted the most recent SAC Meeting in Augusta on February 20, 2015. Central Georgia students were represented very well with 15 attendees. After networking and enjoying pizza, Christi Snider, SAC President, welcomed all and recognized those SAC representatives in attendance — Sandra Menifee, Latha Parthasarathi and Marion Grier. GRU faculty members, Amanda Barefield and Lori Prince, were present to discuss the baccalaureate degree program offered in Health Information Administration. Professor Prince also gave a presentation regarding the evolving history of HIM over the last 30 years. She emphasized the need for more scholarships to cover the cost of higher HIM degrees as GRU responds to AHIMA’s call for higher degrees.

President Christi Snider discussed the need for documentation of policies and procedures for future GHIMA SAC’s. As a natural process of information governance even in our student membership, President Snider emphasized the need for policies and procedures to maintain consistency, ensure timeliness of future projects and accuracy of officer roles — just as information governance is warranted in health care organizations across a national continuum. Members reviewed the documentation and a future vote will be taken by SAC representatives for adoption of the proposed policies and procedures.

President Snider also presented a modified version of her presentation, “Student Advocacy,” given originally at the AHIMA National Convention in San Diego last year. President Snider’s passion for advocacy was clearly articulated as she urged fellow students to find their voice and then to convert that passion into action by volunteering for advocacy opportunities through GHIMA such as the Hill Day experience recently sponsored as a scholarship and the Blue Button Movement.

Annette Baker, GHIMA Student Outreach Coordinator, met with the group via teleconference and conducted an activity for the attendees to research contact information needed for the Career Fair that will be held on March 27th. The winning team was able to find 13 healthcare organization contacts in 30 minutes.

President Snider closed the meeting by thanking all of the students for their attendance and the faculty sponsors of Dr. Barefield and Professor Prince for hosting this educational event for our students in central Georgia.

Featured Region – North East Georgia Health Information Management Association

Karen Askins, RHIT, CPC, is the president of the North East Region. She works at Northridge Medical Center as a Medical Coder. She codes from all types of patient records and attends patient care meetings in which she discusses what is needed from the physician in terms of documentation.

Karen was in school to become a nurse, but she found that the HIM field appealed more to her because of her preference for the documentation side of healthcare. While Karen loves her current coding position, during school she never saw herself as a coder. “Life is full of surprises, and I am eager to see where this career will take me.” She has decided that she would not change a thing if she could have a do-over because she is on a wonderful path, and knows that the past led her to where she is today.

Karen was asked why she volunteers in her region. She said that participation of volunteers in the NEGHIMA region has been low, and she feels that it is important to keep the region open. Karen was the Vice President of NEGHIMA prior to becoming the President at the beginning of this fiscal year. She would “love to see our region grow, but that requires participation from professionals in our area.” She said that her volunteer experience as vice president and president require only a few hours per week. Volunteering has allowed her to network and meet wonderful people while staying up to date with the ever changing HIM field. Karen would like to encourage others to volunteer in the North East region. “Without volunteers, there is no NEGHIMA! We greatly need participation from members to help grow in our region and field.”

Karen is the mother of “four wonderful little girls, ages 6, 7, 10, and 11. They are my world, and are already showing interest in the HIM field.”

Other officers of NEGHIMA are Juanita Wren and Ricky Rawlins, RHIT, CPC; Ricky is the Treasurer and has been a member for three years. He previously was the President.

The Region has one CAHIM School. Athens Technical College offers an associate degree. Joyce Waters, RHIA, CCS, is the Chair of the program at Athens Tech.

Newly Credentialed Members

During January or February 2015, there were 23 GHIMA members who attained credentialed status!  We extend our congratulations to them all, with best wishes as they progress in their careers.
