Awaken to Spring

First day of spring is officially Friday, March 20th.  I couldn't be more thrilled than to see the rain wash away the last remaining snow.  This has been a very cold and long winter.  I am looking forward to seeing flowers and trees bloom again.

In the January newsletter I reported about the Budget.  For this newsletter I would like focus on community engagement and the work that is currently being planned over the next few months.  I am looking forward to seeing Ward 6 residents in our community and I encourage you to come out to our annual Ward 6 Car Free Street Festival on Saturday May 30th from 1pm to 4pm on Palladium Way.  If you are interested in becoming a vendor, volunteer or sponsor please email: julie.kirkelos@burlington.ca for more information.

I will be creating a new section in the newsletter under Ward 6 Questions.  Please continue to send in your questions and I will be happy to answer to them.  I will feature some of them in our upcoming newsletters and on my website.

In closing let me cite a proverb: ‘No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.’  Enjoy all Spring has to offer.

Power Outage - Emergency 101

The recent power outage on March 14th threw everyone for a loop. In Headon Forest, the outage started at about 4pm and ended around 11pm. The cause of the outage was a result of salt and water affecting a transformer which resulted in a hydro pole bursting into flames and falling over and knocking another hydro pole.

Pole fires are caused by a build-up of road salt residue and contaminants on equipment and insulators. With moisture, equipment can overheat and result in the pole catching fire. This is more common in the spring when temperatures are around 0 degrees C and moisture is present........READ MORE

Update on Norton Mural Project

Recently reported by Burlington Lifestyle, James Gike posted an article called Injecting Art Into Burlington.  This positive article helps to shine a light on our community and the city as a whole.  I'm thrilled that Norton Park Mural is the first project and I hope that it inspires for years to come as the community grows.   The City of Burlington had selected artist collective, PA System (Patrick Thompson and Alexa Hatanaka), to install the mural in Norton Community Park.  The work will begin in May 2015.....READ MORE

TRAFFIC SAFETY & Operation RISC in Burlington - End Distracted Driving

As a Councillor in Ward 6, I can tell you that the number one concern voiced by residents is traffic safety and this concern is shared by residents all over the City of Burlington and the Region.

There are no magic solutions to fixing these concerns but there are opportunities for all of us to do better and to make improvements to our personal driving habits.

While our traffic folks continue to look at origin and destination traffic issues, speed controls like speed bumps, road narrowing and speed limits, our Police have announced that they are implementing a new community program called Operation RISC: Reducing Intersection Safety Concerns. This program will include education and communication about road safety as well as enforcement......READ MORE

Report Potholes in Burlington

Now that Spring officially arrives on Friday, March 20th and the ground thaws, you will notice many more potholes on the road.  Our city roads can be damaged from the weather conditions.

Potholes occur when snow and ice melt as part of seasonal freeze-thaw cycles.  The resulting water then seeps beneath the pavement through cracks which are caused by the wear and tear of traffic......READ MORE

Parking 101 and Drink Responsibly Flyers

As many of you know flyers were mass mailed to homes in the Orchard, Alton and Uptown communities informing residents that a temporary change to the city's parking and idling by-law was approved by City Council.  Temporary changes are in effect until September 2015 (including during snow clearing operations).

Because we were receiving a significant response to this, I posted a further explanation on my website.  Staff are holding a public information session to discuss paid on-street parking permits in Burlington on May 6 at Tansley Woods Community Centre from 7pm to 9pm.......READ MORE

Ward 6 Questions

Q: How do I know when my lot has been assumed by the City?

Q: Recently a builder commenced their construction with the remaining vacant lots. Given the recent and well welcomed warmer weather, the street is filled with mud and particularly towards the end.  Can you please advise if the city or the builder is responsible for cleaning the street on a regular basis.

Q: The past 2 years I had an increased presence of rabbits.  They have destroyed 2 of my trees so far.  Please help me get this problem taking care of.
