Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

March 26, 2015
Basking in the sun and joy of spring on the mountain!

 Dear families and friends,
Weather permitting, this Wednesday 4/1 will be the last day of our 1st-6th grade winter program (no April fools' joke!) This winter season has been outstanding in a variety of ways, but the outstanding feature I enjoy the most is the tremendous growth of many of our skiers and boarders through our time on the mountain.  In addition to building lifelong wellness skills, our time on the mountain supports students in deepening relationships with one another, with taking on new challenges (from learning a new sport to the challenge of functioning well within their group) and with building appreciation for the richness of the community and resources right around them. Thank you to Sugarbush for letting us ski for free and providing us with so many instructors in the middle of the week; to Katie Dahlgren for her endless organizing and supervision; to all the parents who join us as instructors or chaperones k; to those parents who drove equipment (and help unload it upon return) and most of all, to the PTA whose generous funding pays for the bussing, the instructors, the equipment scholarships and the coordination. Let's hope for one more great day to end the season!
Please mark your calendars for the 5th/6th production of Cinderella, scheduled for 6 p.m. on 4/10 and a 2p.m. matinee on 4/11. Everyone is invited to this great event; no admission charge.
      Respectfully,     Kaiya Korb, Principal

Open Hearth After School Program News
Welcome to another Vermont Spring! As we hopefully watch the outdoor temperatures, but revel in the bright sun and longer days, we know that springtime is coming; mud season is on the way. Soon all thoughts of arctic blasts will be of the past. Cold weather and chilly winds do not keep our after school kids down, and we have had a fun time being outside playing, sliding, and exploring, and an active time indoors engaged in our STEAM activities.
For the past few weeks, Katie Doherty has been teaching our scientists about air pressure, Jessica has been working with our engineers to create Doodlebots (motorized robots with an artistic flair:), and Samantha has been finishing up a giant box of Crayola crayons, each color creatively designed by one of our talented artists.
As spring approaches and we head into our last trimester of school, our after school staff is planning and preparing several week long theme-based activities designed for grade level groups and addressing our science, technology, engineering, art, and math learning goals. Our 4th/5th and 6th graders will continue with their Tuesday cooking club, planning, creating, and serving the afternoon snack/meal to our entire program. I will work with this group each day to explore food science, nutrition, design, and art. Jessica will be working with the K-1 group exploring the amazing world of bugs, and Samantha will combine art, science and engineering teaching her 2nd and 3rd graders all about flowers.
We plan to have a community event sometime in May when you can come in and visit, taste our homemade cuisine and view the many amazing things we’ve done this year in our after school program. More news about this will follow in our next newsletter.
Sincerely,           Susan Amestoy
