Dear Latina A.R.M.Y. Friend,

Please note, the event is scheduled for Wednesday April 22nd. It was inadvertently written as Tuesday. We apologize for this inconvenience.

We understand our lapse in communication may have you wondering about us and the important work we do. The following is a brief update and an invitation to learn more.  We thank you for your ongoing support.

As you may know, our co-founder and Executive Director, Nancy Roldàn Johnson, has temporarily relocated with her family to Sweden. While she continues to be involved, our board of directors has focused on the organization’s strategic direction. In addition to this work, we have been partnering with consultants and experts in the fields of gender-specific curriculum development and assessment to rewrite, pilot and evaluate our core program to better serve our target audience. These efforts (made possible by a two year capacity building grant from Hispanics in Philanthropy’s Funders Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities) have resulted in the expansion of sessions offered and the inclusion of research-based best practices, including a specific focus on culturally-sensitive, strengths-based, and trauma informed elements.

The Latina A.R.M.Y. (TLA) Board of Directors invites you, our caring supporters and partners, to learn more about our strategic direction as we celebrate the launch of our newly enhanced 10 week program, La Mariposa: A Personal Empowerment Program for Adolescent Latina Girls.

Join us on Tuesday, April 22nd from 6:30 - 8:30pm at
Yale’s La Casa Cultural building located at
301 Crown Street in New Haven.

Please pre-read the attached Nielsen report published in 2013 highlighting the Latina Power Shift which provides the strategic context on why the empowerment of our Latina girls is critical to our communities and to the future socio-economic growth in the US.

Please RSVP to Eliana Nunez at Eliana.Nunez@cigna.com by April 3rd.

Please feel free to email me directly with questions.

Sincerely,

Eliana Nunez
Chairperson

About La Mariposa:

La Mariposa is a gender responsive, culturally competent group program model for adolescent females from 12 – 18 years of age.  The vision of the program model is to offer culturally diverse Latina girls, a 10-session group curriculum that provides support through the multiple challenges that they typically face.  The program is a “personal empowerment program” as it teaches practical skills that can help intervene in cycles of self-doubt and negative self- talk which many adolescent girls experience. Through experiential activities, lively discussions, and discovering the truth within, these skills (called JARS) can positively impact the direction of their lives.

Our Mission is to celebrate and empower young Latinas by providing inspirational role models and introducing powerful life skills for personal excellence.
