Burmese Learning Center

Donor Update - March 2015
The North Andaman Network Foundation and Andaman Discoveries are very pleased to announce the completion of another successful academic year at the Kuraburi Burmese Learning Center.  The 2014-2015 academic year ended on March 13th after students completed final exams.  This was an exciting year for the BLC, with eleven volunteers dedicating their time to teach English and three service groups that came to make vital improvements to the center.  The new playground and kitchen area continues to offer a fun and healthy environment, while a new ping pong table is fostering a love of sport and friendly competition!   The over fifty students at the center continue to receive an educational opportunity that they would otherwise not be offered, and the teachers work hard to provide quality lessons in a happy learning environment.

As donors your contributions of every kind directly help with the success of the Burmese Learning Center.  Without donations this center could not survive.  The monthly expenses are still a struggle and every amount donated goes a long way in helping cover the cost.  The North Andaman Network Foundation (NAN) and the Foundation for Education and Development (FED) are working hard to raise the remaining amount needed for the 2015-2016 academic year which starts in May.  The BLC fund, administered by NAN, can cover up to 75% of the total operational cost of the center.  The ideal budget for the 2015-2016 academic year is 35,000 USD and as of now we only have half of that amount raised.  Any donation amount can help. Please help spread the story of the BLC to family and friends so that we can see it through another successful year! Thank you for your continued support of the Burmese Learning Center!

BLC DENTAL HYGIENE
The students at the BLC are now brushing their teeth each afternoon thanks to The Hilversum International School!  This group of high school students came to the center as part of their study and service tour this past February.  After only one day at the center, they realized that many of the children eat sweets after lunch and have rotting teeth.  READ HERE

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Zaw  Nyein, age 13
Zaw Nyein is always ready and willing to help out with the daily operations at the learning center.  If it means spooning out the food at lunch, helping teachers take care of the younger children, or working on a group service project, he is ready and willing!  For those of you who have visited or volunteered at the center, you will probably remember the smiling face and quiet demeanor of this young man.  He is one of the oldest students at the center and is great encouragement for the younger students to stay in school.  Zaw Nyein came to Thailand 2 years ago from Burma with his parents and is an only child.  We hope that Zaw Nyein can continue to study and help mentor the younger students at the BLC!
