BSU alum Jon McTaggart named 2015 Distinguished Minnesotan

Jon McTaggart, president and CEO of American Public Media Group, will be the 33rd recipient of Bemidji State University’s Distinguished Minnesotan Award.

First presented by the university in 1981, the award acknowledges contributions of current or former Minnesota residents who have performed exemplary service in the state or nationally. As this year's Distinguished Minnesotan, McTaggart will give the address at BSU's Commencement ceremony on May 8.

16th Annual Student Scholarship & Creative Achievement Conference is tomorrow

Dr. Stephen Vogt, chief investment officer for Mesirow Advanced Strategies, Inc., and a 1985 Bemidji State alum, is the keynote speaker at tomorrow's 16th annual Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference.

This year's conference has a different schedule than years past, with a 9 a.m. start. Poster presentations will be held in the Crying Wolf Room of the lower Hobson Memorial Union, and student presentations will be held throughout Hagg-Sauer Hall. Poster presentations will close at 11:30, and eight sessions of student presentations will continue until 2:50 p.m. The conference will break for lunch and a keynote presentation at noon.

Chamber Singers Heading to Carnegie Hall

BSU's Chamber Singers are heading to New York City for an April 18 performance at Carnegie Hall.

The singers are joining choirs from Fountain Valley (Calif.) High School Vocal Music and Saint Mary’s College of California Chamber Singers and Glee Club for the Gotham SINGS! Choral Showcase. The concert will begin at 8:30 p.m. on the Perelman Stage of Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium.

Speakers set for inaugural TAD Talks

The Department of Technology, Art & Design will feature 11 business and industry leaders from across the country in its first-ever TAD Talks event on April 30.

Presentations will begin at 4 p.m. in Hagg-Sauer 100. Appetizers will be available at a post-event reception beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. TAD Talks are open free to the public.

Mitchell Mauk, principal of San Francisco-based Mauk Design, will give the keynote presentation. Mauk, who has won multiple awards from organizations such as the Industrial Designers Society of America, the Society for Experiential Graphic Design and the American Institute of Graphic Arts, will present “Things I Wish I Knew When I Was a Student.”

Talley Gallery features local artist Alice Blessing

Local painter Alice Blessing will explore motherhood and the impact children have on the lives of their mothers in an exhibition of her work, called “Motherhood,” opening today at the Talley Gallery. The exhibit features paintings done by Blessing and then modified by her daughter, Azalea.

The show runs through May 8. Blessing will host an opening reception in the gallery today from 2-5 p.m.

Music students compete for scholarships at DeKrey contest

Music students will compete for three $1,000 scholarships during the Department of Music’s 29th Don and Ione DeKrey Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship competition on April 11.

The competition will award scholarships to vocal music majors who must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher or a music department GPA of 3.25 or higher. The competition is open to the public beginning at 2 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall of BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Admission is free.
Hagg-Sauer Hall project gaining momentum in St. Paul

A significant construction project that calls for the demolition of Hagg-Sauer Hall and extensive renovations to several other academic buildings on campus is gaining momentum in the State Legislature.

The Minnesota House Higher Education and Finance Committee, chaired by Rep. Bud Nornes (R-Fergus Falls), included $18.1 million for the project in HF1605, introduced in late March.

As part of the planned renovation, Hagg-Sauer Hall, BSU’s main academic building, would be demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art classroom and learning center. The project would also include significant renovations to existing academic space on campus, creating new homes for programs now located in Hagg-Sauer. The project would reduce BSU's total square footage by more than 53,000 square feet and renovate 73,000 square feet in Bensen, Bridgeman and Bangsberg halls and the A.C. Clark Library. Demolition and construction would begin during the summer of 2016 and be fully completed by March 2018.
Host sites announced for 2015 Neilson Foundation Internship program

Eighteen Bemidji-area businesses have been selected by Bemidji State and the George W. Neilson Foundation to host interns as part of the 2015 Neilson Foundation Internship program.

The program, which is entering its fourth year, offer financial incentives to businesses who hire BSU and Northwest Technical College students for paid internships. Funding for the internships is split equally, with 50 percent of an intern’s hourly compensation paid by the foundation, up to a maximum of $2,500. The other 50 percent is paid by the host business. The program has grown from 13 internships at 12 businesses during its first summer in 2012 to 21 internships at 18 businesses this year.

Anderson wins gold as USA topples Canada at IIHF World Championships

Junior forward Stephanie Anderson scored her first international point as a member of the U.S. National Women’s hockey team, helping propel Team USA to its fifth IIHF World Championship in six years with a 7-5 win over Canada on April 4. She is the first Beaver women's hockey player to win a gold medal in international competition.

Anderson's medal continued what has been an incredible month for BSU women's hockey. In March, the team knocked off eventual national champion Minnesota in the WCHA playoffs and came within one game of its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth; goaltender Brittni Mowatt became the program's first-ever First Team All-America selection; and rookie head coach Jim Scanlan was named National Coach of the Year.
