Dear Friend

This is a busy time at the Wood, hence a second Spring newsletter, with exciting events ahead, and news of recent happenings, and the birth of the new charity.

With blessings

‘Like One Big Family’
Our favourite quote from our
Conservation and Wellness Weekend, March 27-29
“I’m going to take away all the fun, and the love, and the family we've made.” (Joshua 6)
All 16 of us had a lovely time on this weekend, and did a lot for our own wellbeing and the wood’s.  Many of the group were new to Hazel Hill, and made a really deep connection with the place and with other people.
We did some great conservation work, landscaping the outdoor cooking area by the main buildings: planting a wide range of woodland shrubs, trees and flowers, and creating an amazing large wooden bench, masterminded by Roger Bingham.

Other highlights included large amounts of fantastic food, woodland games, some super sessions on wellbeing and learning resilience from the wood, and two great evenings around a campfire, with scary stories, and some lovely poems and songs.

Here are some other quotes from the people on the weekend:
“I will take away the feeling of everyone chatting and chatting while they were working and spading.  Five stars.”  (Theo, 10)

“I had a lovely weekend and made some big life decisions.  The community feeling and the mindfulness ideas all helped.” (Maggie, 20)

“I take away a sense of peace.  I’ve reconnected with nature, and built a really nice bond." (Mandy)

Compost Loos:
a lesson in resilience

Children visiting Hazel Hill Wood often take a healthy and delighted interest in our compost loos: they immediately see the logic, and ask, “Why don’t we all have them?”  On our recent Conservation And Wellness Weekend, we had four kids under 11, who were fascinated to see how human poos turn into excellent, odour-free compost after a couple of years. Women's Conservation & Spring Cleaning Weekend
May 15-17 2015

Agatha Manouche writes:
This weekend is an opportunity for women and girls* to spend substantial time tending and attending to many aspects of what
makes Hazel Hill Wood such a wonderful environment. While those of us who come to the wood regularly know how much we receive from being there; the intention this time is to invite a larger
community of women to share the experience and express our womanly care in return.  I am inviting women prepared to give to the wood and to the Oakhouse some needed attention and care while enjoying the delights of female company at Springtime in this very special place.
We will each dedicate 7 hours of our time during the weekend :
- giving a jolly good Spring clean to the Oak House
- tending to the parts of the wood next to the “Women Circle”
- taking turn in cooking for each other.
During the weekend I will be helped and supported by Kate who regularly shares her many skills with groups involved at the wood. The days are long in May and we will still have plenty of time to enjoy each other’s company, telling stories and singing around the camp fire and/or spend some time
alone in the wood.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Agatha Manouche

Marcos' Wellspring of Wellbeing constellation retreats

at Hazel Hill Wood
Thursday 28 May 6pm – Friday 29 May 4.30pm
Thursday 15 October 6pm – Friday 16 October 4.30pm

Would you like to spend more of your life thriving, not simply surviving?

Would you like to explore how you can enrich your life with a greater sense of wellbeing?

These constellation retreats provide a safe space to work with a small group of participants (max 9) in the beautiful and tranquil setting of Hazel Hill Wood. As well as an opportunity for participating in constellations, there will also be solo time in the woods, connecting to yourself and to nature.

Constellations are a whole-system approach to looking at an issue, using people to physically represent aspects of the system and create a 3-dimensional map.

Costs £95 per person includes food and basic sleeping accommodation, or single rooms available for an additional £20. Concessionary rates also possible.

Join us at Hazel Hill Wood for our summer Family Fun & Conservation Weekend. A beautiful space to be in contact with nature, with our families and to make new friends. We’ll have a range of conservation projects, for example, improving the area around the main pond, helping to care for the woods - offering healthy exercise and gentle cultivation. The weekend is open to individual adults, as well as families with children (minimum age 7+ with a family member). We make every effort to ensure everyone can join in with conservation activities whatever their age or ability.

Cost including food and sleeping loft or camping accommodation: £70 adults, £50 concessions and under 18’s. Private or family bedrooms are available at small premium: £90 adults, £60 under 18’s.

Introducing Hazel Hill Trust

Alan Heeks writes:

I have been caring for this wood, and steering its evolution, for 27 years.  The reason I am gifting the wood to a new registered charity is to ensure continuity, avoid dependence of the project on me personally, and to enable the next stage in the wood’s evolution.

In the vision review of November 2013, all nine of us had a clear sense that it’s time to widen and diversify the educational activities at the wood: for example, offering more programmes for families, young adults, and local groups.  The charity structure gives this more credibility, and better access to grant funds.

I will be the first Chair of the new charity, and the existing team who do a great job of caring for the wood with me, will continue.  There will be a few additions to the team, notably Marcos Frangos, who joins us in May as half time General Manager of the new Charity.

More from Marcos and an update on the charity’s plans in the next issue.
