TAKE ACTION ~ State Must Restore Funding for People with Developmental Disabilities
Most everyone knows that California is suffering through a crippling drought. It is headline news. But do you know that California’s developmental services system, your regional centers and your community service providers, have been experiencing a funding drought that started in the early 2000s? As dire as the drought is to the State, the ongoing funding issues pose equally dire consequences for the families and clients served by this system.
Towards the end of last month, the Pasadena Star-News printed a compelling editorial on restoring funding for individuals with developmental disabilities. Check out the editorial at http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/opinion/20150320/restore-funding-for-those-with-developmental-disabilities-editorial.
This is what regional centers and service providers in California have been advocating and fighting for the past few months. And your advocacy matters too. Our system is facing a monumental challenge. It’s big, it’s complicated, and there are a lot of moving parts. But we have to start somewhere, and a 10% budget increase for our system is the first step the Lanterman Coalition is rallying around
To make that and comprehensive reform happen, we need you to stand up for people with developmental disabilities, their families, service providers and regional centers. The system that supports people to live in communities of their choosing needs you. We encourage you to email this article to Governor Brown (click here to send now) and your State Senator and Assemblymember. Their contact information is available at http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/.
Here is short sample message you can copy and paste to the Governor and state legislators:
I urge you to support a 10% increase in funding for Developmental Disabilities services. Please read this editorial from the Pasadena Star-News which explains the reasons why you should: http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/opinion/20150320/restore-funding-for-those-with-developmental-disabilities-editorial.
"People with developmental disabilities and their families have a right to get the services and supports they need to live like people without disabilities." It is in your hands to keep the promise of the Lanterman Act. |
