News from SETC - Society for Epidemiology in TB Control

Dear SETC membership,

I know you have not heard from us in a while, but I promise that Lisa, Jason and I have been working hard on planning for our new section for epidemiology! We look forward to seeing many of your at the NTCA annual meeting in June, where we will be having our second business meeting. In the coming month we will have our section of the NTCA website up and running. Please check the SETC section on www.tbcontrollers.org for important updates for our membership! In the meantime, see below for some SETC updates:...
Planning for the June SETC Business Meeting

Our second business meeting will be on June 8, 2015 in conjunction with the NTCA annual meeting in Atlanta, GA. We have decided on a theme, “Preparing for TB elimination: how can epidemiologists contribute.” This is an important opportunity for us to network, get to know each other and hear about all the great epidemiology work happening around the country. We are finalizing the agenda and speakers and will share on our website in the coming weeks. We hope that you can attend!

Travel Grants for Epidemiologists!

The SETC is pleased to announce the availability of travel grants to the SETC Annual Meeting on June 8, 2015 and the National TB Conference  on June 9-11, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The purpose of the SETC travel grants is to provide financial support for epidemiologists in training or TB control staff using epidemiologic skills (data collection, analysis, interpretation or communication and disease investigations) who are interested in TB who otherwise would not be able to attend the SETC Annual Meeting. This opportunity, at an early stage of one’s professional career, could generate enthusiasm and continued interest in the field and may provide a lifetime commitment to working in public health and TB.

Eligibility:
Eligibility for the travel grant includes the following:
  • Status as one of the following:
    Student candidate for the degree of MPH, PhD, or MD with a concentration on epidemiology, public health or other related degree; or
    Currently working as an epidemiologist focused on tuberculosis
  • Currently working/studying in the U.S. or one of the U.S. territories;
  • A strong interest and preferably some experience in any aspect of TB and public health;
  • Completion of the 2015 SETC Travel Grant Application; and
  • Submission of a letter (required) from their dean, department head, supervisor, or principal investigator indicating: support of the applicant’s participation in the conference; permission to attend; statement explaining how attending the conference will benefit the individual and the program; statement that no other funding is available for the applicant's travel. The letter may be submitted separately but is also due by April 10, 2015.
Travel Grant Specifics:
The travel grant provides reimbursement for travel expenses up to $800 to Atlanta for the SETC annual meeting on June 8, 2015. In addition to these funds, the following is included:
  • Waived registration fee for the 2015 National TB Conference – $450 benefit
  • Complimentary one-year membership in the NTCA/SETC – $55 benefit
  • Opportunity to network and meet TB scholars, clinicians, nurses, epidemiologists, and program staff
No funding is available for lodging or food expenses. Recipients will be reimbursed upon submission of a reimbursement request form and receipts for their travel expenses following the meeting.

Johns Hopkins Summer Courses on TB Control

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Graduate Summer Institute of Epidemiology and Biostatistics provides an opportunity for public health professionals to continue their training in public health and develop mastery in the competencies of the field. We would be most grateful if you would share information about our summer program in epidemiology and biostatistics with colleagues.

In 2015, JHSPH will offer three intensive courses on tuberculosis control:

  • Epidemiologic Basis for Tuberculosis Control, June 2 – June 12, 2015. ONLINE COURSE
    Originally developed by Dr. George Comstock, this course covers the history of the epidemic, the devastating consequences of high HIV prevalence in areas with endemic TB infection, and the emergence of new forms of drug-resistant TB.

  • Public Health Dimensions of Global Tuberculosis Control: New Tools and Interventions June 22 - 26, 2015
  • Advanced Issues in Global Tuberculosis Control: Achieving Impact
    June 29 - July 3, 2015
    Dr. Jaap Broekmans, Chair, WHO Global Task Force on TB Impact Measurement, will teach these two high level courses that examine the role of new TB tools and evidence-based interventions, and their epidemiological impact on TB control efforts in in both high burden and industrialized countries. Taught on-site at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Other methods courses include  Principles of Epidemiology,  Health Survey Research Methods, Investigation of Outbreaks, Health Situation Analysis and Public Health Surveillance. Courses are offered in one, two or three-week formats, as one-day workshops and online. Participants may register for professional development, to enhance current skills, or for academic credit for those interested in applying the course work towards a degree program.  Housing is available through the program.
