LEAGUE SUPPORTS

Park District Referenda

The League of Women Voters of Wilmette is supporting passage of the Gillson Park Referendum and the Langdon Park Referendum that appear on the April 7th ballot.

After a study committee of the League’s members researched the issues, including the positions of the two different citizen groups formed (one to support and one to defeat the proposals), a group of about 75 League members and the public met to hear the committee’s report at Sheridan Shores Yacht Club on March 13th. After the presentation, members met to take a position on a series of six questions for each referendum.

These questions included:
  • Did the Park District reasonably involve the community and incorporate community feedback into the scope of each project?
  • Does each plan reasonably address impact on the environment?
  • Does each plan reasonably address health, safety and legal issues?
  • Does each plan appropriately incorporate the varied interests of the Wilmette community?
  • Is the plan for funding each project fiscally responsible?
  • Does the League recommend a yes or no vote on each referendum?

After a thoughtful and conscientious discussion, consensus was reached to answer each question “yes” except for one question: the League was unable to reach consensus and answer the question on whether the plan reasonably addresses impact on the environment at Langdon Park.

The need to make Gillson Park ADA accessible and replace deteriorated infrastructure factored heavily in members’ decision. The Park District’s ability to finance both projects under current conditions without raising residents’ taxes was also critical to members.

Both referenda will appear on the April 7th ballot. One ask voters to approve a bond issue of $12.7 million for Gillson Park and the other asks voters to approve a bond issue of $1.8 million for Langdon Park, both for the purpose of constructing, equipping, maintaining infrastructure and facilities.
