Central Queensland State Forests

NPAQ has made two applications for funding to undertake rare species surveys in some of the Central Queensland State Forests previously designated as future national parks.  Some of these forests, such as Barakula and Gurulmundi, have ecosystems not represented in the national park estate, or highly endemic plants and animals.

How did palm trees get to Central Australia?

The ABC have reported an amazing alignment between an Aboriginal legend and the work of Tasmanian ecologist, David Bowman.  In 1894, German anthropologist and missionary, Carl Strehlow, recorded an Indigenous legend describing how gods from the north brought seeds to Palm Valley.  DNA tests on palm seeds from the outback near Darwin enabled Professor Bowman to conclude that seeds were indeed carried to this Valley by humans up to 30,000 years ago.

Thank you again for celebrating National Parks Day with us!

Again, a big thank you to all those who attended the National Parks Day Weekend recently.  National Parks Day (Saturday 28th March) marks the day of significant, ground breaking Queensland legislation behind the first national park declared under the 1906 Act.  It also celebrates the anniversary of the declaration of the first national park in Queensland.

Here are some photos from the Weekend
