UBC Health and Integrated Education
On March 18th, 2015, UBC Senate approved the disestablishment of the College of Health Disciplines and the transfer of its activities into the Office of the Provost, effective July 1st, 2015.
This decision marks the beginning of a new era for UBC’s health disciplines in the context of UBC Health which brings together all health programs at UBC in a virtual partnership to improve collaboration. Read more...
DHCC needs help to find a new name
The UBC Division of Health Care Communication (DHCC) will be making the transition with the College of Health Disciplines to the Office of the Provost in July. The Division began as the Informed and Shared Decision Making Project in the 90's and became DHCC with the establishment of the College of Health Disciplines in 2001.
Given this significant change, the Division needs a new name. They want your help to find a new name that will reflect their scholarly work to bring patient and community voices into health professional education.

Come and see some original captioned photos and videos created by the Physical Activity Research Centre (PARC) at ICORD. Participants answered the questions "Has PARC impacted your life? And if so, how?"
Everyone is welcome to come to the exhibition, and encouraged to share their own thoughts on the works. This project was facilitated by UBC medical students Kat Liu and Allen Jone as a directed studies project with Drs. Bonnie Sawatzky and Ben Mortenson.
The PARC PhotoVoice Exhibition takes place on Thursday April 9th, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre Atrium (818 West 10th Ave, Vancouver, BC).
VCH asks UBC Health Mentors to help re-design staff orientation
Vivian Eliopoulos, Chief Operating Officer of Vancouver Acute Care Services, met with a group of Health Mentors in March to help bring the patient's voice into orientation sessions for new Vancouver Coastal Health employees.
"We want to introduce new employees to the organization through the people it serves." says Vivian. These 'Meet and Greet' orientations are held each month for about 60-75 new employees - a mixture of health professionals and hospital administrative staff working in acute and community services.
Vivian and her colleague Heather Prime, Communications Leader, want to revitalize their new employee orientation to make it more experiential, and to demonstrate the importance of patient-centred care. They are working to develop a pilot project with UBC Health Mentors who have experience with the many services offered by Vancouver Coastal Health in Metro Vancouver.

UBC Health Mentors program topic of keynote at UK conference
In March, Angela Towle was the keynote speaker at the annual conference on Communication in Undergraduate Medical Education held in Manchester, UK.
The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Patient involvement and communication education’, a topic of particular interest since the General Medical Council (GMC), the body which regulates medical education in the UK, made patient and public involvement a requirement. Everyone, including the GMC, is trying to work out what that means in practice!
Angela based her presentation on the Interprofessional Health Mentors program and included anonymized extracts from student journals to illustrate what students can learn with and from patients about the importance of words and meanings.
“Everyone was most impressed with the program and especially the quality of the reflections of the students. One of the conference delegates has even asked if she might use some of the extracts as best practice examples in a teacher training session on reflective writing for clinical staff!” said Angela.
We hope to see some of the delegates from the Manchester conference at the Where's the Patient's Voice conference in November!
The conference will look at advances in the role that patients play in training health professionals since the first conference in 2005. View the 2005 conference report here.
