Draft Horse Plow

Spring has sprung at Emergency Food Network’s Mother Earth Farm and it’s time to prepare the soil for planting. What better way to do this than the old fashion way – Draft Horses!

Join us in kicking off the growing season at our Mother Earth Farm! Four to six draft horse teams will plow and ready the fields for spring planting.
This FREE event is fun for the whole family! Come anytime on April 4, between 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. The horse teams will be plowing throughout the day.
Attendees are encouraged to check EFN’s website for updates to this event as it could be cancelled due to inclement weather.

With the start of the crew from Washington Correction Center for Women out at our farm, Mother Earth is springing into life! The greenhouse is full, beds are newly tilled, and thanks to a day's work by new and old volunteers, our orchard of over one hundred trees is pruned. Our most exciting donation this month? Fresh, mildly spicy, vibrantly green scallions.

Volunteer of the Month
Dave Mitman
|
|
Dave Mitman has been pruning the orchard at Mother Earth Farm for over a decade. A Master Gardener and professional pruner, Dave has shaped our donations of organic apples, pears, grapes, peaches, and more by his careful work.
For years, he has instructed volunteers and women from the Correctional Center we work with in proper technique and skills of observation, spending hours in the orchard and returning throughout the growing season. In March 2015, Dave decided to take on a small group of volunteers in a pruning workshop, hoping to ensure that Mother Earth Farm always has committed help with our over one hundred fruit trees.
He is also a passionate and recognized seed saver, and will continue to work with our crew on seed saving practices. Dave is a strong supporter, dedicated volunteer, and good friend to Mother Earth Farm, and we thank him for all his contributions.

Volunteer Appreciation Week
April 12-18
|
|
Did you know that more than 2,500 volunteers lent a helping hand at EFN in 2014? With the help of volunteers, we were able to distribute 15.3 million pounds of food to 64 food banks, meals sites, and shelters and repack 1.3 million pounds!
Each time we send out an email seeking volunteers for a Repack Project, Mother Earth Farm, or a special event, we are truly amazed with the number of volunteers that come forward to help. We are honored to be able to work with such a large number of dedicated and compassionate volunteers who have chosen to actively lend a hand to help others in a time of need.
As a small token of our appreciation, EFN volunteers are invited to stop by our Lakewood office during Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 13-17 between 8am-4pm) for a treat!
The Mariners would also like to show their appreciation at their annual "Salute to Volunteers" game. Special ticket prices will be offered at their April 21 game against the Astros. Learn more here.
