The Importance of Empowerment

It is easy to look at a community and see its deficits, especially with lower income individuals. One of our fundamental beliefs is that each person is endowed with assets and strengths that need to be leveraged and empowered to grow.

Our work is focused on cultivating partnerships to foster thriving Edgewater families, schools and community. A key part of this work is empowering those in our community and developing leaders.

Here is a glimpse of what this mission has looked like on the ground in our community during the month of March:

Thriving Families
  • We connected Lumberg Elementary parents with our county PTA representatives to start a PTA at Lumberg. A majority of the leadership is made up of Latino moms who are empowered to lead and make a difference at their child's school.
Thriving Schools
  • We are continuing our work of aligning various nonprofits and agencies in our area around helping all kids succeed from cradle to career. We have contracted with JVA Consulting to help us find an excellent youth mentoring partner to work with Jefferson Jr/Sr High students.
  Thriving Community
  • A thriving community starts with neighbors getting to know each other and creating local solutions to needs. We are leading a Community Building Team of Edgewater residents to develop welcome packets for new residents and encourage neighbors to connect and get to know each other.

Thanks to all who came out and supported us at our Joyride Fundraiser!

Update on Our Lumberg Family

In January we were made aware of a Lumberg family who was in need of some resources. A grandmother with five grandchildren is trying to find a permanent home in the community. The family has even had to live in a hotel along Colfax for a few weeks.

Solutions are hard to find in situations like this but we are amazed by the hope that this grandma has and for her perseverance. We are committed to walking with her through this stressful situation.

Thank you to those of you who have committed funds and furniture to help this family when they find a better housing situation.
