Rescue        Rehabilitate      Reintegrate

March 25th marked the 8th anniversary of the United Nation's International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This day honors and remembers the millions who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system. To permanently honor the victims, a memorial, The Ark of Returnwas erected at the United Nations Headquarters in New York this month. Right To Be Free shares the memorial's message, to inspire the world to fight against modern forms of slavery: human trafficking and forced labor.

Fenuku

At the young age of five, Fenuku worked long hours on Lake Volta in Ghana. He bailed water from the boat, plucked fish trapped in nets, and dove under water to untangle fishing nets. Eric Peasah and his team rescued Fenuku seven years ago and he was reunited with his family.
Since his mother is searching for employment outside the community and his father's whereabouts are unknown, Fenuku lives with his maternal grandmother and attends school.

The distance from Fenuku's home to school is quite far. Every day he treks over four miles on unpaved roads to and from school. Not only is it physically tiring, it's tough on his shoes, which he has also outgrown. Despite the long walk to school each day, his teacher said Fenuku was always punctual and he loved mathematics.  However, since
he was so tired when he arrived at school, he often fell asleep. His teacher said he would do much better in school if he had a bicycle to alleviate his fatigue. Fenuku also does not have a backpack, so he carries his books in a worn plastic bag.

If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to help purchase a bicycle, shoes and backpack for Fenuku, please click on the button below.

Educational Outreach

Part of RTBF's mission is to raise awareness of human trafficking and the plight of trafficked children in Ghana.

Eric spoke at the San Francisco Public Library last fall at an event organized by Sydney Osterweil-Artson. The program was Sydney's culminating project as a Diller Teen Leadership Program Fellow and was co-sponsored by the San Francisco Public Library's Cultural Awareness Committee and the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women.
Sydney spoke about her experience in Ghana last summer, working on Lake Volta with Eric and the RTBF team, as well as the time she spent with the rescued children at the Rehabilitation Center. Her goal was to help raise awareness about local and global human trafficking.
With your continued support, Right To Be Free can carry on its work to stop child trafficking and help rescued children and their families become financially independent. Please consider making a tax deductible donation so we can continue our rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration programs. No amount is too small to save the life of a child. Thank you and please help us spread the word by sharing this newsletter.
