Thoughts for Passover
The story of the Exodus from Egypt is considered to be the seminal experience in the history of the Jewish people. Each year, during Passover, we gather around the table with family and friends for a seder to recount the story of the Exodus through readings, prayers and actions all meant to stimulate our personal attachment with this experience. According to many sources, it is the most widely celebrated Jewish event each year.
While the focus of the holiday is in celebrating the biblical exodus from Egypt, its focus on freedom in general has helped earn it this special place on the Jewish calendar. Beyond the telling of the story, much of the brilliance of the seder as a Jewish home observance lies in the powerful memories that it creates in each of us. While the seder is about preserving the memory of the Exodus from Egypt, it is also about creating new and lasting memories for those who sit around our table as well as remembering the moments we had with those who are no longer sitting with us.
