BACI: Five Years of Reflection, Learning & Growth
The last five years have gone by in a flash. We can’t believe (or maybe don’t want to accept) that it is time to get ready for our next strategic planning process. As always at BACI, our first step forward is actually a glance backwards – a reflection on where we’ve been, what we’ve learned, and how we’ve grown.

The Fifth Space
The Fifth Space is another innovative initiative involving a partnership between BACI, InWithForward and other service providers in our sector.
Eighteen BACI staff from all areas and levels of the organization were selected to experience a new kind of role -- where 20% of their time each week is spent working with a team of staff from other agencies to try out ideas that matter to them and the people they serve.
Read Rosalind Ho's articles on the Fifth Space Blog --"Teamwork in Acceleration" and "First Contact" -- to learn more about this creative dimension from an insider's perspective.

BACI Stories: Josh's Story
The voice was intense; not fear exactly, but concerned. The rest of the noise coming out of the phone was city – rushed and crowded, traffic and life nearly louder than the voice I struggled to recognise. This couldn’t be… Josh??
I couldn’t have been more surprised if he had told me he was calling from Mars. Josh lives in the Surrey suburbs. He hates transit. He hates busy big-city streets. For him to ride a Skytrain alone down to Vancouver’s busiest intersection was astounding.
A few days earlier, Josh had attended a conference called Also Here, Also Queer: Building Inclusive Communities for LGBTQ People Labeled With Intellectual Disabilities. He’d stood in front of a room and told his story with humor and power. He’d met some new people from a Toronto-based group called SprOut. And now he was stepping way out of his comfort zone for a chance to see them again.
When I caught up with Josh last week, he told me a bit more about his life and why it had been so important for him to spend time with those new friends.
Read Part 1 of his story – his experience growing up as a trans person with autism.

BACI Stories: Everyone needs Community!
“Community can come from anywhere. You may be in the mall, or bus stop. Say hello to someone, try to make a connection. Trade contact information, invite a neighbour over for dinner.”
Go beyond your borders. “When I was in Jamaica, I thought I knew the world. But since I’ve been in Canada, I’ve met people from a hundred nations.” All this community has broadened his world view: “My purpose is to reach out to ALL the people; I must be broad-based. If I can reach out, encourage them and meet them where they are, then I can offer them perspective.” With perspective, says George, comes change.
