Issue 45, April 2015, London

Hello there...

Spring is officially here, the clocks have gone forward (how did you do with one less hour?) and the days are only going to get longer and brighter from now on. The daffodils that have been out for a while are now being joined by the swelling buds of magnolia trees unfurling into bursts of heady aromas. Even freshly cut grass smells better!

Along with the lengthening days of spring though come the showers that contribute to the new arrivals of nature we see all around us. Though we may be tempted by the sunshine, the temperamental UK weather means we need to still be on guard and a scarf is a must to keep in your bag to protect against the slight chill.

We can begin to move away from the stews and casseroles that have sustained us over the past four months and now is the perfect time to try a detox or juicing week if that is your thing. I asked for a NutriBullet at Christmas and it has been deliciously refreshing starting my day with a nice colourful medley of fruit and vegetables (tip, instead of just water I add lemon infused water).

Mentally, cast away the cobwebs! Spring clean your mind as you would do with your home – consider any new activities or hobbies you would like to take up. There is no better inspiration to start something new than in spring when the smiles are freer and people around seem more cheerful. Perhaps it’s because of the influx of bank holidays that start about now but take advantage of this period. Use this time to reassess and organise how you want the rest of the year to plan out.

Ironically the oncoming of spring and moving away from winter’s shadows doesn’t always mean good health for everyone. For some it can be a time when you may feel especially run down and it could be because of winter having taken its toil on your system, what with fighting all the bugs and illnesses that have been passed around. For others spring brings about the misery of hayfever and allergies, headaches and sinus congestion being the main issues.

Take care of your body with an acupuncture seasonal tune-up or two. For nasal congestion I recommend trying a sea water spray from the pharmacy to help relieve the symptoms. Or you may want to try sourcing some local honey, it is supposed to help with warding off springtime allergies if pollen is a trigger for you (unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work so well with hayfever due to tree or grass allergies). You can also have acupuncture for hayfever but it does take some time for the system to respond so don’t wait till the symptoms appear.

Have a wonderful spring break: eat well and be well.

Use This Deep Breathing Technique to Calm Yourself

You may have heard that breathing from your diaphragm is a great way to lower your stress levels and breath efficiently. That tip doesn't help much, though, if you don't know how to breathe from your diaphragm.

+ In last month’s newsletter I linked to an article on how to reduce your stress in two minutes a day which took you to an ugly page with internal error and lots of funny looking script. Thank you for letting me know, I have found the same article on the author’s own blog (and it works this time!) so for those of you who were interested, please click here to read it.
