Keep up-to-date with the latest research, education, and events of the Essig Museum of Entomology, the terrestrial arthropod research collection (insects, spiders, scorpions, and their kin). Part of the Berkeley Natural History Museums.

CalDay - Saturday, April 18, 2015 (9:00 - 4:00)

Saturday, April 18th, is CalDay, a campus-wide open house. The biggest draw is always the Berkeley Natural History Museums at the Valley Life Science Building (VLSB). The Essig Museum will host displays in VLSB 3003, and highlight work from the UC Natural Reserves in the VLSB courtyard and room 2063. There will also be Russian language tours of the displays by Max Klepikov. And be sure to visit with the Bug Doctor, Vernard Lewis, to hear him talk about "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" of the arthropod world. 159 Mulford Hall (1:00 - 3:00 pm).

Bookshelf - The Brown Recluse Spider

Despite what many people think, the brown recluse spider is not found in California. This misconception is often based on misidentification of harmless spiders by non-arachnologists as well as medical misdiagnoses of skin lesions of non-arachnid origin. Many “recluse bites” are actually bacterial infections unrelated to spiders. After 20+ years of combatting misconceptions, Rick Vetter has assembled information about the biology, taxonomy, medical aspects and misdiagnoses in a new book “The Brown Recluse Spider” to provide a scientific summary of this infamous arachnid.

BioBlitz - Mt Diablo

Essig Museum staff (and some of you) are participating in the Save Mt Diablo BioBlitz, April 24-25. From SMD's Jim Cartran, "Save Mount Diablo’s annual BioBlitz event brings together scientists, naturalists, and volunteers to explore the biodiversity on a given property.  The 2015 BioBlitz will function as a critical data collection exercise at our flagship Curry Canyon Ranch property and in the Morgan Fire Footprint. The Morgan Fire presents a unique opportunity to study post fire effects." Visit Save Mt Diablo for more information.

High Desert Bug Camp - May 21 - 24, 2015

Description: Desert Insects Galore! Help ISMC flush out desert dwelling insects and other arthropods. Desert biodiversity, even in arid areas, is far greater than the biodiversity of urban ecosystems. Get up close and personal with desert beetles, blister beetles, tarantula hawks and scorpions.

Volunteer with CalBug

The CalBug project is moving into the next phase. Funding for the first phase of imaging and databasing specimen labels ends in June. For the next phase we are looking for people to work on small groups to finish databasing, georeference, and describe their diversity and distribution. Or just go online to our Notes from Nature project to help us transcribe data. To get involved contact us at essig.museum@gmail.com
