KidZWrite

Responding to the results of a community survey, Educational Resources for Children (ERfC) added a new program called Afterschool Adventures this school year to its list of out-of-school time programs. Many families indicated that they wanted to enroll in academic, enrichment and recreational activities but only wanted 6-8 week programs instead of a full daily commitment after school.

Program Development Coordinator, Heather Linstad, saw this as an opportunity to pilot new activities and an opportunity to increase enrollment in our 21st Century Community Learning Centers once the children and parents knew about the many innovative programs offered in their school during the school-year and summer.

One of the first programs developed for the Afterschool Adventures series, was KidZWrite. Linstad said the eight-week program, designed with children's book author and parent Jennifer Moncuse, was created to motivate kids to write, use their imaginations, and experience sharing ideas. Writing under the pen name J. Monkey, Moncuse guides a team of ten students through the process of collaboratively conceiving a book, giving it a name, writing, editing, illustrating, and publishing a children’s book. The youth authors meet two days a week and together develop the focus the book theme, storylines, and characters—from beginning to end. At the end of eight weeks, the published book is presented at a formal “book launch” celebration where the new authors talk about their role as a writer, and present signed books to the school principal, teachers, parents, and grandparents.

The latest book, produced by authors in grades 3-5 at Eli Whitney Elementary School, is called “The Bathtub Battle”. Previous books, all published by grade K-5 Enfield students enrolled in KidZWrite, includes “Becky and the Magical Necklace”, “Keep Looking”, “Traitor”, “Missing”, “Broken in the Middle”, and “Stuck in Dreamland.” Two new books are scheduled to be published this month called “Trouble at the Nasty T-shirt Factory” and “Emerald to Emerald’ and one additional book will be completed in June. All books are available for purchase on Amazon.com. Proceeds from the sales of books go directly to the KidZWrite project. In addition to KidZWrite, Afterschool Adventures offers KidZ Sports, Mad Science, and KidZ in Motion programs.

National After-School Summit

Tuesday, March 24th was a big day for after school. The 2015 National After-School Summit brought together Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger along with other advocates for the out-of-school time field to emphasize the importance of afterschool programs. Federal funding for after-school programs is at risk with the proposed reauthorization of the 2002 No Child Left Behind law. Jodi Grant, Executive Director of Afterschool Alliance, announced a new tweet campaign tweet4afterschool.com.

Let’s have our voices heard by sending letters to our congress and tweeting out to #Invest3to6!

Asanas for Autism and Special Needs – Yoga to Help Children with their Emotions, Self-Regulation and Body Awareness

Author: Shawnee Thornton Hardy

Teaching yoga to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other special needs is easy using this visual how-to handbook.

Breaking down yoga instruction pose by pose, body part by body part, breath by breath, this book uses easy-to-understand language and clear photographs to show parents, teachers, yoga instructors and other professionals how to introduce the life-long benefits of yoga to a child with special needs. These benefits include gaining greater awareness and understanding of the body, learning to self-regulate the nervous system and developing coping skills to work through difficult emotions such as anger, frustration and anxiety. Creative yoga games, activities, relaxation exercises and chair yoga poses are included to make learning yoga a fun, interactive and calming experience for children with a wide range of abilities.

Tell Us Your WHY Blog Series

For the month of March, leaders in the out-of-school time field have responded to the question Simon Sinek asks leaders: Do you know your Why? Our challenge doesn't stop here though! Think about your why and share it on social media using #TellUsYourWhy and #BOOSTConference. Then, join us at the BOOST Conference and hear Keynote Speaker Simon Sinek and be inspired to continue living and leading with intention, passion, and purpose. - Read the series here
