Friends of North Andover Trails
Hi friends! It doesn't look like spring outside just quite yet, but our event calendar is coming alive.  April and May mean dozens of fun, free, outdoor events in North Andover and surrounding towns, which we've compiled here just for you. See you on the trails!

Guided Snowshoe Success

Over two feet of snow made for ideal snowshoe conditions in February. Over a dozen adventurous hikers arrived to a freshly plowed parking lot at the Reas Pond pumping station and explored Mazurenko Farm and Carter Hill. In March, morning rain gave way to a snow flurries just in time for a trip through Town Farm and Farnsworth Reservation. Join us April 12th as we hike Ward Reservation. (Hopefully no snowshoes needed?)

Timber Harvest at Osgood Hill

A demonstration timber stand improvement and thinning has been completed along the Osgood Hill Trail. (See map.) The cutting is part of a Community Forest Stewardship Grant project which also funded removal of invasive species, marking of legacy trees and marking of the timber harvest area by a forester. Interpretive signage will be added this year. There will be an opportunity to view the site during our Osgood Hill walk, on May 17th at 1PM. The North Andover CAM TV channel will also be airing a segment about the cutting.

Thursday Morning Outings at Ward Reservation

There's certainly a lot to see at Ward Reservation, 700 acres of woodland and open fields spanning the border between Andover and North Andover. Starting on Thursday April 9th at 9AM, the volunteer Ward Reservation Property Committee will offer free Thursday morning experiences sharing the story of the best of Ward. Opportunities to learn about Ward’s butterflies, bog ecology, wildflowers, animal behavior, and meet its caretaker are scheduled. Check out the schedule here.

Stevens to Stevens Trail Grand Opening

Save the date for the Stevens to Stevens Trail opening celebration, June 17th at 1PM. The new trail links the Stevens-Coolidge Place to Weir Hill. Beginning at the Stevens-Coolidge Place, the trail continues down Andover Street, across North Andover Town Common, and up and over numerous lots donated to The Trustees of Reservations by the Stevens family, and into the Weir Hill Reservation. Trail construction was funded by the Community Preservation Act. Join the Trustees for a ribbon cutting and walk along the new trail. For more information about this event call (978) 689-9105 or contact Kevin Block at kblock@ttor.org

North Andover Town-wide Cleanup

Residents join forces at the end of April for the town's annual cleanup. FONAT will be pitching in this year, hosting a trash pick-up day at the Sharpners Pond Rd entrance to Boxford State Forest on April 19th. All are welcome to join in and fill a bag. On April 25th, Shawsheen River Watershed Association is planning a clean-up on North Andover's stretch of the Shawsheen. Details on both events will be posted on our event calendar.
