10 Genealogy Things You Need To Know Today

Saturday, 28 March 2015

By: Caroline M. Pointer

  1. SO excited about this. StoryCorps now has an app thanks to the founder winning the 2015 TED prize. What a great (and easy) way to record those family stories. Read more: Collecting Human Voices With a StoryCorps App (NYTimes.com).
  2. The Family Curator has a great video review of a handy scanner. I first heard about it myself from Rorey Cathcart and Barry Kline, researchers for PBS' Genealogy Roadshow. Check out the review: HoverCam Document Scanner Review: Fast, Easy, VERY Portable (The Family Curator).
  3. In her annual spotlight of Women's History Month, Gena Philibert-Ortega issues a call to action, but it's not just any call to action, but one that will help you find your family stories and she gives a resource that is one of my very favorites. Take a look: Women's History Month 2015: Manuscripts (Gena's Genealogy).
  4. Have German roots? [Why, yes. Yes, I do!] Family Roots Publishing Company has a great deal: German-Language Newspaper Genealogy Research Bundle - 20% Off Through Tuesday, Mar 31 (GenealogyBlog).
  5. Have Irish roots? [Oh my, yes!] From Claire on Irish Genealogy News: Two More Irish Titles Join British Newspaper Archive.
  6. New record sets listed on Findmypast Friday for the US (Civil War Pension File Index 1861-1934) and various sets of British Military Records.
  7. This week, Ancestry.com added or updated records for Australia; Austria (Jewish); Czechoslovakia (Jewish); England; German (Jewish); Hungary; Latvia (Jewish); Poland; Portugal; Riga, Ukraine, and the US states of Arizona, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas.
  8. This week, FamilySearch.org added or updated record indexes and record images for Australia; Canada; Hungary; Russia; South Africa; and the US states of California, Florida, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and the Records of the Superintendent of Education and of the Division of Education, 1864-1879.
  9. Recently, Genealogy Trails volunteer contributors uploaded various types of records for various counties for the US states of Illinois and Michigan.
  10. USGenWeb Archives volunteer contributors uploaded various types of records this week for various counties in the following US states: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

[And I thank you for your patience in waiting for this to start back up again. It's good to be back. *sips coffee* ~Caroline]
