SAN DIEGO -- On Tuesday, October 12th local American Federation of Teachers (AFT) president Jim Mahler sent out a despicable mail piece [PDF] full of outright lies, designed to fool Republican voters in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.
After the thuggish tactics of Mr. Mahler's just before the filing deadline [PDF] back in August to intimidate Republican candidate and Iraq Combat Veteran Orrin Kole into not running didn't succeed, Mr. Mahler is now resorting to outright lying about Mr. Kole to Republican voters in the district:
Claim: Mr. Kole "is from out-of-state"
FACT: Mr. Kole was born in Orange County, raised in Riverside County and moved to San Diego County in 2005, after serving in the Army in Iraq for 15 months.
Claim: Mr. Kole "was a Democrat"
FACT: Mr. Kole was initially an Independent, but registered as a Republican in 2005. A clerical error temporarily switched his registration to Democrat once and was immediately corrected back to Republican once Mr. Kole learned of it. He was NEVER intentionally registered as a Democrat.
Claim: "Republicans rejected Orrin Kole when he tried to get elected to the San Diego County Republican Central Committee"
FACT: Mr. Kole indeed WAS elected, coming in third - as a first time candidate. Furthermore the Republican Party unanimously endorsed Mr. Kole for this office. And Mr. Mahler himself stated that fact in his letter to Mr. Kole, dated August 7th [PDF].
BOTTOM LINE:
Mr. Mahler's "The Democrat From Out-of-State" mailer intentionally lies and was deliberately sent to Republicans in the district in an attempt to hurt Mr. Kole's chances with Republican voters. We should expect higher standards in our political contests - especially from our teachers.
Chairman Krvaric stated: "I've seen some dirty campaign tactics before but this mailer is an absolute disgrace. And to think that our teachers would stoop to lying in this way just adds insult to injury."
"Mr. Kole has served in the National Guard for the past 10 years, is a decorated Army Iraq Combat Veteran, and a current Peace Officer and member of the CCPOA. Nobody deserves this kind of treatment - especially someone who has served our nation with such honor and distinction."
"We will be holding a press conference on Wednesday at 1 pm outside the AFT offices to demand that Mr. Mahler apologize for the mailer and mail out a retraction. Anything less and we will call on Mr. Mahler to resign," Krvaric concluded.
