New Ford Ranger

The new Ford Ranger

There is absolutely no doubt that the Ford Ranger has a strong following in South Africa. Let’s not forget that the Ranger outsold the Toyota Hilux in November 2014, the first time the Hilux has been kicked off it throne in decades.

The last Ford Ranger is a facelift over the current bakkie. At the front the design updates are quite noticeable, while the vehicle has also gained a number of new technologies.

These new features include the Sync 2 infotainment system, lane keeping aid, and adaptive cruise control, to name a few. Another addition is the driver impairment monitor. This system uses the bakkie’s forward-facing camera and sensors to detect whether the driver is getting drowsy. Apart from the electronic stability programme, the Ranger also offers adaptive load control. This feature adapts the electronic stability programme when a load is detected.

Engines
The engine range is unchanged with the availability of the 2,2- and 3,2-litre turbodiesel derivatives. The 3,2-litre unit still develops 147 kW and 470 N.m, while the 2,2-litre now develops 118 kW and 385 N.m, up from 110 kW and 375 N.m. For the most frugal derivative in the range, the 2,2-litre unit is also offered as a 96 kW alternative, which Ford claims an improvement of up to 22% compared to the outgoing 88 kW derivative. The only petrol derivative is the 2,5-litre unit rated at 122 kW and 225 N.m.

Just to recap, Ford claims an 800 mm wading depth, 230 mm ground clearance, 28-degree approach and 25-degre departure angles.

Want one?

Unfortunately you'll have to be a bit patient: the new Ranger will be launched locally in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Groot Toren

Klipspringer Groot Toren 4x4

Team Best we set the record straight before we get cracking on this one: those new low-profiles on your Corsa bakkie ain’t going to cut the mustard here. Klipspringer Groot Toren is first and foremost a 4x4 trail and requires a suitable vehicle just to get to the cottage.

Right, let’s lock the diff and start climbing. The 25km circular trail starts 10 kays outside of McGregor. From word go you’ll be clawing your way up the Groot Toren through virgin fynbos and proteas, eventually peaking at Klipspringer Cottage - a secluded refuge perched on a gentle slope, circled by 1000ha of fynbos and views to eternity and back.

The cottage is a rustic stone-and-thatch number, sleeping a total four guests and fitted with basic comforts required for a night or two at altitude, including solar lighting and gas geyser for hot water.

The pitched thatch roof houses a mezzanine loft room with double bed, while down at ground zero you’ll find the living area and an extra two single beds.

The kitchenette is a simple affair, with kettle, gas cooker, dining table and a welcome indoor braai/fireplace - ask any Souf Efrican Everest climber, it's no fun braaing your chop in the snow.

The bathroom has a loo and shower. Throw open the double doors leading off the living room onto a timber deck and max out on those views. Alternatively, stay in bed and gaze upon them through big loft windows.

Early morning or evening strolls along the 25km track are standard fare, as are the awesome sunsets and deafening silence.

If you’re up for adventure and have the wheels to match, Klipspringer is for you.

Rates

R350pp nightly, and R200 per vehicle; children under 12, R150.

Mickey Thompson Deegan

Mickey Thompson launches the Deegan 38 Mud Terrain

An updated range of Mickey Thompson 4x4 tyres is available locally and the star of its range is the new Deegan 38.

The name pays homage to truck-racing champion Brian Deegan and the new tyre is said to have been designed to provide traction "in the gloopy stuff – the kind of conditions where most tyres fill their tread pattern and the voids between the blocks with mud, making it as effective as a dragster’s slicks".

Brian Deegan (bottom right):

The Deegan 38, in collaboration with Mickey Thompson engineers and Deegan’s competition expertise, is a serious off-road tyre but, the tyre supplier says, “one which has great street manners, too” and come in 15, 16, 17, 18 and 20” diameters

IDEAL FOR DOUBLE CABS, SUVs

The tyremaker claims: “The large outer voids and bevelled tread edges enhance self-cleaning and lug integrity while wide offset lateral grooves channel water and mud away from the tread. Tighter-packed inner voids reduce noise and provide enhanced contact on tarmac.”

Along the shoulder, Mickey Thompson's (tread-on-the-sidewall) SideBiters and unique shoulder scallops keep excess mud off the tread. The enhanced sidewall design,it's claimed, includes high-tensile ply cord for integrity, reduced rolling resistance and minimal heat build-up.

It’s available in sizes up to 37” and in the P-metric sizing system, are available in 305/70/16, 315/75/16, 305/65/17, 315/70/17 and 305/60/18 and 305/70/18. The flagship of the range is a 305/55/20.

MAXIMUM WHEN WET

Mike Harling, Mickey Thompson's South African agent, said: “We expect the Deegan to be a popular choice for those who want a specialised tyre which is still versatile enough to use year-round. It's been exhaustively researched for maximum performance in wet and muddy conditions but is more than able to hold its own on dry tarmac."

The bad news

The Deegan 38 series is launched in the States, and will only be available later in SA. Watch this space - we'll let you know the moment they are here...
