From NYFOS Artistic Director Steven Blier:
“There are plenty of musical surprises in Letters from Spain—Wolf and Schumann sung in Spanish, haunting Iberian folk songs sung in Russian, the pristine beauty of Carlos Guastavino's music, and extended excerpts from Bolcom's Lorca Songs (a New York premiere). This cycle contains some of Bill's most dazzling music, and I've become obsessed with Lorca—a fascinating artist, an extraordinary life. This beautiful cast is primed to take on the duende (soul) and salero (spice) of Spain: amazing voices, deep souls. Don't miss this one!â€

The New York Festival of Song completes its 2014-15 NYFOS Mainstage series with LETTERS FROM SPAIN–A World of Song in Spanish Poetry on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 8:00 pm at Merkin Concert Hall.
The poetry of Spain has inspired composers around the world, eliciting some of their most colorful and rhythmically alluring songs. Touring through Russia, Germany, Argentina, and America before flying home to Spain, this new program samples the music of her greatest songwriters. Music from Dmitri Shostakovich's Spanish Songs, Robert Schumann's Spanisches Liederspiel, William Bolcom's Canciones de Lorca, and works by Piotr Tchaikovsky, Hugo Wolf, Carlos Guastavino, Enrique Granados, and many others.
Soprano Corinne Winters joins NYFOS following the November 2014 release of her album with Steven Blier, Canción Amorosa/Songs of Spain—a collection of love songs drawing on Spain's many cultures and languages. Opera News wrote that “Corinne Winters's slim, dark-hued soprano entices the listener in this wide-ranging collection. [It] sends the listener off wanting more... Perhaps a sequel?†Winters recently debuted at the Washington National Opera and is set to make additional debuts over the coming seasons with Covent Garden, Canadian Opera Company, Opernhaus Zürich, Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, and others.
Joining Winters is a pair of dynamic young men. Tenor Theo Lebow returns to NYFOS following the 2012-13 season performance of Songs of the Midnight Sun, part of NYFOS's residency at Caramoor, while baritone Alexey Lavrov makes his NYFOS debut. Lavrov is a recent graduate of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and returns to the Met this upcoming season as Schaunard in La Bohème and as Silvio in the new production of Pagliacci.
The trio of singers will be joined by Steven Blier, NYFOS artistic director and “national treasure†(The New York Times) and associate artistic director Michael Barrett on piano.
Tickets are $40-$55 for the public, $10 for students. A limited number of advance purchase $20 Real Deal tickets are available. Tickets can be purchased online at www.kaufmanmusiccenter.org or by calling the Merkin box office at (212) 501-3330. A complementary wine reception with the artists will follow the performance.
Alexey Lavrov appears courtesy of the Metropolitan Opera.

NYFOS MAINSTAGE
The original thematic song party
"New York Festival of Song is the most important nucleus of contemporary song in the world."
— Ned Rorem

Steven Blier and Michael Barrett have hosted New York Festival of Song's signature series since founding NYFOS in 1988. Blier is a national treasure, adored for his boundless knowledge of song, smart and funny stage commentary, meticulously researched program notes, and gift for imparting his passion to the singers he coaches. Barrett—the perfect foil for Blier—is a sublime and suave musician, the mastermind of Caramoor (2003-2012) and the Moab Music Festival (1992-today). These two have pioneered and explored the art of the thematic song recital. Their programs draw from repertoire across musical genres and styles; they delight in unearthing rarely heard songs, and programming familiar works in surprising contexts. Audiences come away inspired, smiling, lighter on their feet. "An evening of transporting theatre—with music." (The New York Times)

“People have a primal need to be sung to and communicated with through song. The essential core of truth in each song—that part where you feel ‘that's me, I've been there’—that’s what we’re always looking for.†— Steven Blier
Now in its 27th season, NEW YORK FESTIVAL OF SONG (NYFOS) is dedicated to creating intimate song concerts of great beauty and originality. Weaving music, poetry, history and humor into evenings of compelling theater, NYFOS fosters community among artists and audiences. Each program entertains and educates in equal measure.
Founded by pianists Michael Barrett and Steven Blier in 1988, NYFOS continues to produce NYFOS MAINSTAGE, its series of thematic song programs, drawing together rarely-heard songs of all kinds, overriding traditional distinctions between high and low performance genres, exploring the character and language of other cultures, and the personal voices of song composers and lyricists.
Since its founding, NYFOS has particularly celebrated American song. Among the many highlights is the double bill of one-act comic operas, Bastianello and Lucrezia, by John Musto and William Bolcom, both with libretti by Mark Campbell, commissioned and premiered by NYFOS in 2008 and recorded on Bridge Records. In addition to Bastianello and Lucrezia and the 2008 Bridge Records release of Spanish Love Songs with Joseph Kaiser and the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, NYFOS has produced five recordings on the Koch label, including a Grammy Award-winning disc of Bernstein’s Arias and Barcarolles, and the Grammy-nominated recording of Ned Rorem’s Evidence of Things Not Seen (also a NYFOS commission) on New World Records. Its recently released CD on the GPR label, Canción amorosa, focuses on Spanish song—Basque, Catalan, Castilian, and Sephardic—with soprano Corinne Winters accompanied by Steven Blier.
In November 2010, NYFOS premiered NYFOS NEXT, a series for new songs, hosted by guest composers in intimate venues. This season the series returns as a mini-festival during the month of February 2015 with all concerts presented at OPERA America’s National Opera Center. In the fall of 2014, NYFOS officially introduced its unamplified cabaret series NYFOS AFTER HOURS at HENRY's Restaurant on the Upper West Side, drawing full houses and superlative voices accompanied by Blier at the piano.
NYFOS is passionate about nurturing the artistry and careers of young singers, and through its NYFOS EMERGING ARTISTS program has developed professional training residencies around the country, including The Juilliard School’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts (now in its 10th year); Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts (its 7th year in March 2015); San Francisco Opera Center (over 15 years as of March 2014); Glimmerglass Opera (2008–2010); and its newest project, NYFOS@North Fork in Orient, NY (2 years).
NYFOS’s concert series, touring programs, radio broadcasts, recordings, and educational activities continue to spark new interest in the creative possibilities of the song program, and have inspired the creation of thematic vocal series around the world.
