Hello everyone, and welcome to the shiny, new Nevada Outdoor School newsletter.  It's been a long time since we've had something like this so we are all very excited to be able to bring you the latest and greatest of what's happening at NOS!  We have had some of your names on our e-mail list for quite a while now, so you might be surprised to be receiving this e-mail, but I hope you will enjoy it none the less.  If you do not wish to receive any more, please use the unsubscribe feature at the bottom.  If you know anyone who would be interested in this monthly mailing, please have them sign up on our website at www.NevadaOutdoorSchool.org  Some of the features we will have to start out are our program updates, meet a NOSer, upcoming events and Triva!  Send the trivia answer to info@nevadaoutdoorschool.org for chance to win a sweet prize each month.  The start of our new fiscal year was Oct.1st and I am totally jazzed about the year to come.  I hope you will take a few minutes each month to share in our fun by looking through the (insert name here).  Oh yeah, almost forgot our other contest... our newsletter needs a name.  Send us your suggestions and the winning name will be good for a stylish NOS beanie!

Have fun out there,
Andy

Meet a NOSer

Trina Kleintjes - AmeriCorps Program Director

Why were you given your particular name?
I was named Trina because when my mom was pregnant my parents thought I was going to be a boy so they decided to name me Tori.  Then my father made some jewelry for my mom with all of our initials, "C" for my dad Chris, "A" for my older sister Ansie and a "T" for for what they thought was going to be Tori.  When it turned out that I was a girl they decided to keep the "T" and go with a name that was Dutch like my sister's so they picked Trina.
How many brothers and sisters do you have?
I have only one sister and she is 2 years older than me and her name is Ansie and she lives in Gardnerville.
Where were you born?
I was born and raised in Carson City and I pretty much lived there until I moved to Winnemucca.
What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is steak.
Are you a morning or a night person?
I am definitely more of a night person.
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
If I could be any animal I would either be a monkey or a dog.  A monkey because I have always loved them and I think they are some of the most intelligent animals.  I wouldn't mind being a dog, although I would have to live with an owner like me, because I spoil my dogs rotten.
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
If I could visit anywhere in the world, it would have to be an African Safari. I would love to see all those exotic animals up close; I am a real big animal lover.

1st Grade Lesson

Education

It is the beginning of a school year and Nevada Outdoor School is again bringing inquiry-based science and hands-on learning to elementary school students throughout Humboldt County.  During the month of September, our educators reached 1,000 students with our fun and exciting in-classroom lessons.  In October, Nevada Outdoor School brings Archeology and Culture themed curriculum into the classroom providing students with the opportunity to unearth mud fossils, study dinosaurs, explore Native American Myths, and much more!  First grade classrooms this month will also enjoy an extended outdoor lesson which includes students closely observing and studying signs of fall on a nature walk around their school yards and local neighborhoods.

AmeriCorps

The AmeriCorps year in rural northern Nevada is off and running. By now in many of the rural communities they are seeing a new faces. In the Wells community, there is a new member Shiloh Walker, she is serving at the Wells Family Resource Center and right next door is Shirley King who is serving at the Silver Sage Senior Center. Shirley will be starting her second year with AmeriCorps in December and is currently finishing her first term. In Elko, the American Red Cross has Derek Hayes who is just getting started and will be out and about representing them and AmeriCorps soon. Ely will have Bailie Malay serving at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. Lander County School District has Derek Lofing who is helping out by tutoring the students. In December, he will be joined by his wife Jaimeline, who will be completing her VISTA term of service and taking on a state AmeriCorps position so that she can continue to serve her community of Battle Mountain. Here at Nevada Outdoor School's Education Program we were lucky enough to have Megan Allen stay on for a second year. We were also fortunate to pick up Ursula Unruh who also will be teaching natural science to the students of Humboldt County. Don't worry if you still want to get involved there are two positions with AmeriCorps available here at Nevada Outdoor School. On top of all the good that NOS's AmeriCorps program is doing in the rural communities of northern Nevada this year we have a member serving in Reno with Friends of Nevada Wilderness. So keep your eyes out for all the new and returning AmerCorps in your community. If anyone is interested in any of the open positions please contact Trina Kleintjes at (775) 623-5656 for more information and how to apply.

Outdoor Ethics

“Trash is kinda weird. When you walk by it, it becomes your own,” an inspiring young girl. This 6-year-old has the right idea! We’ve been working all summer to inspire kids and kids at heart to take care of nature. Participants drove all-terrain vehicles (ATV) and explored Tread Lightly! at ATV Rider Camp. We have three new batches of Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainers spreading the low-impact message after backpacking and learning how to educate others about LNT in the Santa Rosas, Tahoe, and the South Warner Wilderness. We also had LNT lessons at NOS’s other kids camps, where participants had cat hole relay races, discovered the wildlife rule of thumb, and tested out durable surfaces. If that sentence was a bit confusing – you should join us for a program!

This month we’re updating our lessons online at
www.nevadaoutdoorschool.org/OutdoorEthics.htm. These materials are available for your use to inspire others. We also have staff available to come to your classroom, meet you on a trail, or another setting to put on an outdoor ethics lesson. You can select from those online or we can fashion a lesson specifically for your participants’ needs. Contact Jen Stockton at 775-623-1712 or Jen.Stockton@NevadaOutdoorSchool.org for more information or to schedule a lesson.
