Talking About Multiculturalism
-----------------------------------------------
How would you describe a successful multicultural New Zealand? What are the barriers to achieving your vision?
These are the questions Multicultural New Zealand would like to discuss with you as part of a project to develop a widely accepted strategic agenda for a multicultural and multilingual New Zealand.
The project is funded by the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO, and is taking place from January to June 2015. Once we have consulted on these first two questions we will publish a discussion document which sets out our collective vision and the obstacles we have identified. The discussion document will provide the basis for a second round of discussion to generate actions that will overcome the obstacles and achieve the vision of a multicultural New Zealand.
The project is being led by former Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres, who is an honorary advisor to Multicultural New Zealand. He will facilitate workshops around the country and prepare the discussion document in consultation with the Executive of Multicultural New Zealand.

New Heritage Opportunities with Digital Resources

Are you keen to research your family tree but daunted by complicated and pricey genealogy websites? The library is now offering free access to MyHeritage Library Edition, an ideal starting point for finding out about your past.
MyHeritage, available in forty different languages, enables you to research over 5 billion historical records from all over the world as well as more than 1.5 billion exclusive user-generated family trees. This international database is accessible from home with your library card and PIN/password, and has nifty features such as the Record Detective which automatically finds new ancestry records for you.
MyHeritage is perfect for beginners and the ideal complement to our popular Ancestry database. One of our volunteers, a keen genealogy enthusiast, tested the database and described the experience as “better than Christmas” after finding all sorts of new information about his ancestors. Our genealogy expert and Hot Seat host evaluated MyHeritage and found it “intuitive and user-friendly” as well as “attractive and useful”.
So whether you are a new to family research or a seasoned genealogist, you can visit the library website, find MyHeritage on our Digital Content page and enjoy free access to this database. Researching your past has never been easier!
Computer Literacy Classes At Upper Hutt City Library

Upper Hutt City Library is partnering with Stepping Up to provide Computer classes from April.
Computer Basics

You will learn how to use the core functions of a computer and about file management.
Email 1 Setting up an email account

This module is intended for people who do not already have an email account.
Email 2 Using email

In this module you will learn how to use your email account.
Word 1 Text formatting

You will learn about basic formatting and Word skills.

the beginnings of Trentham Military Camp.
Teddy Bears Sleepover and Picnic - 12.30pm Saturday April 18th
Drop your favourite teddy or soft toy off at the Library on Friday 17 April – the toys will sleep over then you can come back at 12.30 on Saturday to share a picnic, find out what your toy got up to (there’ll be photos!) and enjoy WWI picture books in the children’s library.
Anzac Biscuit Bake Off - 11am Saturday April 18th
Enter your homemade Anzac biscuits in our Bake Off competition. The only rule is they must contain rolled oats. Deliver your batch and register at the Library by Friday 17 April then come and enjoy the judging at 11am on Saturday the 18th in the Rotary Lounge. Great prizes to be won!

Cat Connor: Eraserbyte Book Launch

Dawn Service at the War Memorial Baths, 1969
Did you know that for many years the Dawn Service for Upper Hutt’s Anzac Day commemorations were held at Maidstone Pool, the local swimming baths? Officially known as the War Memorial Baths, this pool was opened in 1958 and had a flagstaff embedded with Rolls of Honour in its forecourt.
This photograph shows the last Dawn Service held there in 1969. The following year the local Anzac Day commemorations were moved to a new site in front of the recently opened Civic Administration Building, where they have been held ever since.
