March 2015
WE’RE ALMOST THERE!
There’s still time to support our Spring Drive and help us reach our goals.

There’s just under two weeks left of our Spring Drive. So far our supporters and friends have raised an incredible $97,250 and 75,300 pounds of food. And with a little more help, we can make our goals of $215,000 and 150,000 pounds of food.

Donations directly help people like Rita and her grandson Michael. Rita thought she’d be retired at this point in her life, but after her daughter fell ill unexpectedly, Rita found herself caring for her grandson – and stretching her weekly budget to the breaking point.

“I needed to take care of my grandson. I will do whatever I can to make sure that he has food on the table at home and a lunch to take to school.”

Luckily, thanks to people like you and the success of our drives, Rita was able to get the food she needed at her local food bank. Help us ensure that we can be there for more families this spring – please support our Spring Drive today.

The fastest, easiest way to make a financial donation is online. You can also donate by phone with a credit card by calling 416-203-0050 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Non-perishable food donations can be dropped off at any local fire hall or a participating grocery store.
YOUTH TAKING ACTION AGAINST HUNGER
Shawn Johnston, a Grade 12 student at W.A. Porter Collegiate, spent his March Break volunteering at Daily Bread.
Students volunteer over March Break

Hunger is a big problem in Toronto. For many students visiting Daily Bread Food Bank, it’s the first time they’ve realized it is a problem. Problems that they can do something about. It’s why Daily Bread’s Take Action Project is so important – because it gets students and youth involved and learning about these issues. This past March Break over 150 students and youth took part in the Take Action Project, sorting over 69,000 pounds of food and learning about how poverty is affecting their neighbourhoods.

“I NEVER FORGET HOW FORTUNATE I AM.”
Long-time donor tells us why giving to Daily Bread is so important to her.

Donors across our city are the backbone of our work. We’re always inspired by their generosity and their commitment to ending hunger. And Wendy, a long-time supporter, is no exception. She shared her reasons for supporting Daily Bread.

I never forget how fortunate I am to have enough to eat; to have heat and electricity in my home. I feel grateful whenever I make my bed because it is warm and dry. So when my circumstances improved, it was natural for me to increase my donation to Daily Bread.  I believe that Daily Bread is a well-run and lean charity that provides an essential, basic service—food. I want the people who come to Daily Bread to know that there are people out there who care.

Thank you Wendy – and thank you to the thousands of people who help us keep our doors open throughout the year. We couldn’t do this work without you.
TAX WORKSHOPS
Daily Bread hosts annual income tax filing workshops to help food bank clients

Why are filing your taxes so important for someone coming to a food bank? Because even people with no taxable income can access important benefits such as the Ontario Child Benefit.

“We have a tax and benefit system,” says Garth MacGirr, who has volunteered to help people on low incomes file their taxes for the past 18 years, at agencies across the city including Daily Bread Food Bank. “If you don’t file your taxes, you don’t benefit.”

In 2011, Daily Bread surveyed food bank clients across the city and released a report: Filing Income Taxes and Accessing Food Banks: Are Ontarians With Low-Income Getting the Benefits They are Entitled To?
