DLNW Goes Before the Oregon State Legislature
On April 1, DLNW Executive Director Leslie Brock, and volunteers Jan Schumacher (tissue recipient), Scott Nance (donor dad) and Tracy Hoyle (heart & kidney recipient), traveled to Salem and gave heart-felt testimonies in front of the Oregon State Legislature. Their testimony was in support of Senate Bill 751, an act to establish the Organ Donor Registry and Public Awareness Fund. The creation of this new fund would allow us to expand our educational efforts across Oregon, reaching thousands more Oregonians every year. Stay tuned for updates on this important legislation!

Raising Awareness One Duck at a Time

Every year during Donate Life Month, PRSSA at University of Oregon puts on a donor drive for a competition. The event focuses on teaching the community the importance of organ donation and promoting the discussion of registering as an organ donor. During the event, students have fun engaging with fellow students while learning more about donation. Students can either sign up as an organ donor or pledge to discuss organ donation with friends and family.
Before the event, PRSSA spreads the word about the event, and they share a story of a local U of O student that has been touched by this cause. This year, they focused on student with a special story, Bryant King.
University of Oregon senior, Bryant King, was born with an underdeveloped kidney. He has had three different kidney transplants from three different family members. He received his first kidney transplant from his Dad when he was five years old. A few years later, when Bryant was 11, he received his second transplant from his uncle. Within just a few more years, it had failed.
“This has set me back, but it has also given me the drive to want to succeed in my life goals and get a college degree,” said King.
Just last year, in 2014, Bryant received his third transplant from his older brother.
King’s current kidney will not continue to function for much longer and he will need to undergo his fourth transplant. Despite his setbacks, King strives to raise awareness about organ donation on his campus and is volunteering his time with both UO PRSSA and Donate Life Northwest.

We have a variety of roles such as: Course Set-Up, Walker Check-In & Goodie Bag, Parking Monitors, Course Monitors, Staffing 'Education Stations' on the walk, Water Station, Course Breakdown, Cheerleaders, and Clean-up Crew.

The DMV & DLNW: A 40-Year Life-Saving Partnership

When Donate Life Northwest began working with the DMV in 1975, only three percent of the Oregon population was registered on the Donor Registry. Now, 40 years later, 74 percent of the Oregon population is registered. This is due in large part to the DMV’s commitment to asking customers if they would like to become anatomical donors.
About 400 DMV employees at 60 offices throughout Oregon are the driving force behind asking customers whether they would like to register for the donor registry and place a “D” on their driver license or identification card.
This past January, Donate Life Northwest sent our 2014 “Threads of Life” quilt on a tour to DMV field offices around the state in order to bring attention to our 40-year partnership.
On Monday, April 6th, the tour ended in Salem during a formal ceremony to publicly thank all DMV employees for a partnership that has had an incredible impact on individuals, families, and communities across Oregon.
During the ceremony, donor mom Dotty Pantle and liver recipient Mark Williams spoke about what the DMV partnership has personally meant to them. Donate Life Northwest Executive Director Leslie Brock presented the 2014 quilt as a gift of thanks to Tom McClellan, the top DMV official.
The quilt, an accompanying plaque, and a book illuminating the meaning behind each of the quilt’s 57 squares will now be on permanent display in the lobby of the DMV headquarters in Salem. We encourage you, as members of the Donate Life community, to visit the headquarters to view the quilt. While doing so, stop a DMV employee and say, “Thanks for asking!”
