HCC and the Lions Club Kingstown SVG Empowering Communities to Reduce High Blood Pressure

The HCC and the Lions Club of Kingstown SVG (St. Vincent & the Grenadines) in partnership with the SVG National Diabetic and Hypertensive Association (DHA) held the 'Blood Pressure Screening for Communities' workshop on Wednesday April 1st, 2015 attended by Lions Club outreach staff and community nurses from the Ministry of Health. The Lions Club of Kingstown is one of the subgrantees on the Blood Pressure Control Through Community Action (BPCCA) project - Phase I, funded through the Australian Direct Aid Program. |

Through the initiative the Lions will be screening over 1000 individuals in underserved communities across St. Vincent and monitoring those found to have high blood pressure for medication and lifestyle compliance. The Lions are led by Director Mrs. Beverly Reddock in partnership with DHA President Sister Rosita King and their team.

HCC President is a Member of New High Level Policy Advisory Group
|
|
HCC President Professor Sir Trevor Hassell joined the recently formed World Cancer Research Fund International High-Level Policy Advisory Group. This group has been formed to help advise on how WCRFI can effectively meet the evidence needs of the global policymaking community in developing and implementing policy for cancer and non-communicable disease prevention. The high-level Group comprises experts from government, academia and civil society from Australia, Barbados, Canada, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as observers from the World Health Organization and the Union for International Cancer Control.
The Policy Advisory Group will provide advice on how WCRFI can best interpret and communicate the evidence for policy, produce effective policy outputs and identify relationships and alliances across government, civil society and elsewhere to enhance their policy impact. This process for updating policy evidence is conceptually similar to their Continuous Update Project for science.

Healthy Executive Director!

Dr. James Hospedales Executive Director of CARPHA and special advisor to the HCC recently completed the 2015 Grenada International Triathon in a cool 1hour and 35 minutes! He finished 3rd in the 50+ age group and 20th overall. He also took the opportunity to promote healthy ageing and the importance of physical activity in the related media interviews.

One of the most effective tests to determine how effectively a diabetic is managing their glucose level is the A1C test. According to the National Diabetes Education Program’s (NDEP) website, “The A1C is a lab test that measures your average blood sugar level over the last 2 to 3 months. With so much recent attention paid to the legalisation and use of recreational marijuana and in the deadly wake of synthetic psychoactive street compounds, alcohol, the archetypal drug, is often overlooked. In efforts to bring the deleterious effects and burden of alcohol abuse and addiction to the fore, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, has designated every April since 1987 Alcohol Awareness Month in the USA. This year's theme is, “For the Health of It: Early Education on Alcoholism and Addiction”, promoting the prevention of early alcohol use, increasing the recognition of the impact of alcoholism, and reducing the stigma around treatment for alcoholism. Palcohol, the brand name of a powdered alcohol product that can be mixed with water or sprinkled on cereal to create a cocktail, is facing a legal battle in several US states before it even hits the market. Read more
