The Green Sanctuary
Rev. Jennifer Ryu

Three years ago, WUU was certified an official “Green Sanctuary”.   The designation acknowledged the incredible work of the GS team and articulated our commitment to being a place where each individual considers his/her environmental impact in every action.  What is the status of our commitment today?  How does consideration for the environment intersect with our overall Justice work?

WALT

Want a chance to look at the Williamsburg landscape from a whole new perspective?  WALT is working with the Williamsburg Land Conservancy to offer an afternoon class that looks at current community land conservation efforts and how its benefits everyone. Enjoy an afternoon at the Williamsburg Winery (with good wine of course) with the folks who know best. Conserving our Community: A Walk, Talk,& Taste, Experience, Learn will focus on the issues of land conservation & the work of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy. The Duffeler family, founders of The Williamsburg Winery, will discuss why they placed an easement on their land. The session, lead by Caren Schumacher Williamsburg Land Conservancy executive director, will include a short walk on the property & a special wine tasting.  The program is Thur. Apr 23: 3-5:30pm at the Williamsburg Winery and registration is encouraged, the program fee is $10.

Follow up with another great class with Jerre Johnson, W&M Geologist - retired, who will inspire you to look at how our geologic world changes and why. He is presenting Climates through Geologic Time that highlights climate change through geologic time. Review the history of these changes since the formation of the Earth including variations in solar output, in atmospheric composition, in biologic influences, & others have caused these changes. An emphasis will be placed on changes over the last 20,000 years. This 3 session program will be held on Thursdays  Apr. 30, & May 7 &14: 10:30-12noon at the  Wmbg Reg Library, Schell Room. Scotland St.  The program fee is $25 and registration is encouraged.

The Williamsburg Area Learning Tree (WALT) offers wonderful learning opportunities to "Try Something New."  These unique programs are a sample of the more than 65 classes offered this spring that are open to everyone curious to learn more.  Registration is available online at www.wuu.org/walt, flyers with registration forms and a complete list of courses offered are at the W/JCC Libraries.  For more information contact: WALT at 220-9975

August Wilson Play Reading Planning Meeting this Friday
Join us in Fahs House this Friday (April 17) at 7pm to help plan a play reading based on the work of August Wilson, an important African-American playwright. There are copies of some of his plays in the WUU library. Please feel free to read them and help us plan this event. Please come if you can. If you can't make it and are interested, email Pat Winter at wpiglet84@gmail.com.

The Beloved Community

This year the College of William and Mary is organizing its first Black Lives Matter Conference entitled: “ THE BELOVED COMMUNITY" from Sunday, April 12th--Sunday, April 19th.  It is occurring at the same time as W&M Student Assembly's "We Are W&M Week.”  WUU is an official supporter of the Conference and has contributed financially to help make it a success.

The Conference will embody Martin Luther King Jr.'s conceptions of a "beloved community" where diverse groups of individuals focus on inclusivity and are intentional about disallowing racism and overcoming differences nonviolently and respectfully.

The program's goal is to educate our community about racism, as well as create solutions to combat systemic and institutional racism throughout the course of the week.

Food For FISH (Our local community food & clothing pantry)
It's April, spring and Easter!

Let's fill the FISH wagon with small canned hams,  canned sides such as baked beans, sweet potatoes and greens and lots of canned fruits so people can enjoy a nice Easter meal!  Thanks so much for you generosity! Remember to check dates and make sure all packages are unopened.

After a brief stint as a play prop our red fish wagon has returned!  Also be sure to check the bulletin near the library, we regularly post thank you letters from the organizations (including FISH) that we support with your donations.

Help Needed at FISH-No Special Skills Required
The greater Williamsburg area has much poverty.  Last August 803 outfits were provided for 157 adults and 115 children who were in need.  We, the WUU’s, have committed ourselves to sort and size clothes at the FISH clothes closet each  Tuesday during the month of May from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  No special skills are required.  3 to 4 people (men and/or women) are needed each Tuesday in May.  If you can help out only half a day, that can be arranged, too.  Those interested  please sign up in the lobby of the church on Sunday.  Hanni F. Sherman and Carol Sherman will have a sign-up sheet or call them or e-mail them.  Hanni F. Sherman:  tel. 229-1719, e-mail: richardsherman@cox.net.  Carol Sherman: tel. 229-3344, e-mail: cwsher@verizon.net.
